Journaling: When I was 8 we moved to Aylmer, Ontario, Canada. We lived on a farm, and that farm became my playground. My brothers and I had to work, but we also played a lot. One of my childhood memories growing up revolved around the big cow feed holders. One of the things that the cows were fed was cottonseed. Cottonseed was pretty clean, not too hard, and stuck together amazingly well, but also fell apart with enough force. It was like year round snow, only not cold! When the bin was filed tot he top, we could reach the rafters of the building. We would jump from the rafters down into the cottonseed. It caught us gently, so we could repeat. Seeing who could jump further, getting brave and jumping from the rafters, towards the front where we would slide down the big pile of seed. Then, climb back up the hill. When too much was gone to reach the rafters, we would build forts. One on each side, dug deep until you could barely climb out. Cottonseed fight! The seed held together like snowballs, so we could pile up our seed ammo and throw them at each other. They burst upon contact, and sometimes in the mid-air showering us with cottonseed. When it got too low, then we would make snow angels in the seed and see if we could dig to the bottom. And of course, start asking when the next delivery would be so we could start our games all over again. The biggest treat was when the cereal would come. A trucking company called my dad one day and offered him the cereal that was in a truck that had been in a accident. Even though most of it had not spilled at all, none of it was considered food safe anymore. My dad said sure, and had the cereal brought over to the barn. Of course, since it was in the truck, and had never spilled, we considered it food safe. We gathered together a bunch of my mom’s Tupperware containers and filled them with cereal to eat for breakfast. It was name brand cereal that we never bought because it was pricey! Fruit Loops, Frosted Flakes, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, even a Granola once were among the cereals we got. My dad had a contact, and it worked well for them. We would always go out with lots of Tupperware so we could enjoy the clean cereal. Of course, we loved getting to munch on cereal while we played in our cottonseed too. As long as it was up high, and looked clean!
