journaling reads: That’s how many chickens we bought to end up with just three more in our flock. In the fall, I mentioned to John that maybe we should think about adding a couple more layers in the spring so that we could keep getting enough eggs. He went out that weekend and bought six day-old chicks. Two were for us and four were for the Couches. However, he accidentally bought meat birds, not layers, and so he went out the next day and bought six more Rhode Island Reds, good laying birds. The Couches came and took their four, leaving us with the two Rhode Islands and the six meat birds. Then the neighbor dog caught a chick and we lost one of the meat birds. Then the two Rhode Island Reds turned out to be sick - one died and we had to cull the other. Now we had our four original birds and the five meat birds but no new layers. So John bought six more chicks - three layers and three meat birds. A few weeks later, he took the first set of five meat birds to be processed and a couple of months after that, the second group of meat birds went to the factory. Now we have our four laying hens, three pullets and eight backyard birds in the freezer. What an adventure.
