JOURNALING:
Have you ever heard a song, and it just mesmerized you from the first time the notes hit your ears? That’s what this hymn did to me. I remember being at Mass, and the choir began singing. At first it was the melody, which is gorgeous. Then I started listening to the lyrics. They made my soul soar like only one other song ever has.

After that, I was on a quest to find the perfect version that I could buy, so I could listen to it over, and over again. Over the years, I’ve purchased many different versions of the song; Some by men; Some by women; Some chorale, but none of them ever quite hit the mark on being “THE ONE.”

So, my quest continues. Sometimes they still sing it at Mass, but it’s rare. Only one man ever dares take it on, and he does a phenomenal job with it. It always makes my heart do a little leap of joy when I see the song number listed on the board of songs to be sung for the Mass I’m attending.

LYRICS: BASED UPON A TRANSLATION OF THE ORIGINAL GREEK DIVINE LITURGY OF ST. JAMES (circa 400 AD) BY GERARD MOULTRIE (circa 1873)

MUSIC: “PICARDY,” A FRENCH MEDIEVAL FOLK TUNE (circa 1600 AD) ARRANGED BY RALPH V. WILLIAMS (circa 1906)

Let all mortal flesh keep silence,
And with fear and trembling stand;
Ponder nothing earthly minded,
For with blessing in His hand,
Christ our God to earth descendeth
Our full homage to demand.

King of kings, yet born of Mary,
As of old on earth He stood,
Lord of lords, in human vesture,
In the body and the blood;
He will give to all the faithful
His own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven
Spreads its vanguard on the way,
As the Light of light descendeth
From the realms of endless day,
That the powers of Hell may vanish
As the darkness clears away.

At His feet the six-winged seraph,
Cherubim with sleepless eye,
Veil their faces to the presence,
As with ceaseless voice they cry:
Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Lord Most High!

      Thankyou for sharing the journaling and lyrics to the hymn. There are so many songs sung at the Churches I have attended over the years that bring a thrill to my soul. You have created a lovely page. I will know click on your link and listen to the hymn, thankyou. ( The link did not work so I will ask Mr Google to help me find the song).

      This is so great! I LOVE how you added the fancy first letter of your journaling like they do in the bible often. I also love that you've connected to a hymn like this. I have a song like that too from when I first starting going back to church as an adult after college.... we had our choir sing it at our wedding even. :)
