Journaling reads:

These photos of Charles Sr. and Mary Catton Cooling must have been made between the opening of Caleb C. Smith's shop in 1892 and Mary's death on 24 Oct 1893. Their son, Charles Jr., emigrated to the U.S. in 1894, so they likely accompanied him to remind him of family in Scopwick, Lincolnshire, England, and allay homesickness. Several of Mary's siblings had already made their way to Illinois. Her brother, Holland had married Ellen Eyre and her sister had married George Eyre, brother and sister to Jane Eyre who had married William Henry Winter, my great great grandparents. All three couples were already here, plus other Catton siblings. In 1899, the same year his brother married in London, Charles Jr. married Jane's granddaughter, Florence Annie Todd, daughter of George and Ann Winter Todd.

Mary Catton was baptized 22 Feb 1840 at Scopwick, Lincolnshire and was buried in the same village 24 Oct 1893.

Charles Cooling, Sr., was baptized 29 Mar 1840 at Ashby De La Launde, Lincolnshire and was buried at Scopwick 15 Oct 1915.

They married 16 Aug 1866 and had two sons there - Thomas Holland baptized 1 Sep 1867 and Charles Jr. baptized 1 Oct 1871 both in Ashby De La Launde.

Charles Sr. remarried 27 Dec 1897 to Catherine Fletcher at Scopwick
