Journaling reads:
John had to lie on his back to get this shot of the steps leading to the top of the Aeropagus, commonly known as Mars Hill. The ascent is steep and dicey, the descent terrifying. I declined to go there. I know I missed some spectacular views, but bad knees and having already climbed hundreds of stairs kept me below and safe.
On Paul’s one recorded visit to Athens, he preached from the top of the hill. In the centuries before that it had been the site for murder trials and other government business. Today, it is a pilgrimage stop for people of many faiths - a place to reflect, to learn, and to find perspective in this chaotic universe.
It has also become a symbol for me. John made the climb and descent easily then. Now, in 2017, it reminds me of the road we would walk, the plunge into the abyss, and the climb out the other side.
