Hello friends!
TLP’s wonderful designer Allison Pennington created a fantastic template for our October template challenge. FYI, it is free this month, so check out the October Template Challenge thread in the TLP forum to download it and join in the monthly challenge fun. It is such a versatile template and there are already so many great layouts from our TLP community using it and I wanted to see what I could make with it too!
I love using templates, but I have a peculiarity about me where I’m always driven to see how I can change it up a bit and make it unique to me. For some reason, I really never use a template as designed and love the creative spark a template offers me. So this month I decided to see how I could use one template and not only change it up, but change it up multiple times. I wanted to see if I could create 4 different layouts – and each layout needed to look different while still retaining the majority of the design elements provided in the template. Once I got started, it was super fun to keep going and ideas for new layouts were swirling around in my head. I found this template offered the perfect about of design inspiration that I needed. I loved this challenge for myself and really love the 4 distinct looks I got!
Here is the October Template Challenge Freebie:
And here are the 4 layouts I created.
Layout #1:
Credits: Allison Pennington The Freaks Come Out At Night, Memory Pockets Monthly Wicked, and Mommyish January 2018 BYOC Layer Styles
What I did:
- I duplicated the triangle element a few times and aligned them all on the bottom of the layout.
- I rasterized the October word art so I could cut it and move it into one full work, and then I added a layer style to it from Mommyish’s style pack.
- I used a font on my computer for the word fright and added a layer style from Mommyish’s style pack
- I added a few extra elements and the papers.
- I kept the frame and papers clusters in tact, as well as the sparkles.
Layout #2:

What I did:
- I added a paper border to the top and bottom of the page.
- I moved the triangles.
- I extended a paper under the frame and moved the tag to the other side of the frame.
- I rasterized the October word art so I could cut it and move it into one full work, and then I added a layer style to it from Mommyish’s style pack.
- I deleted the sparkles and added a few elements.
Layout #3:
Credits: Paislee Press Aloha Papers and Elements, Valorie Wibbens Sprinkles #29
What I did:
- I rotated the template 90 degrees
- I added a paper strip under the triangles on each side
- I changed the color of the frame from black to white.
- I deleted the sparkles and October element.
- I added a few elements and my journaling.
Layout #4:
Credits: Designed by Soco Fresh Air, Just Jaimee July 2020 Storyteller Paint Tape Flair, and Sara Gleason Albus Papers
What I did:
- I move the triangles to the right side of the layout, duplicated them and adjusted the placement so that they were stacked with the bottom triangle larger than the top triangle
- I switched the photo frame for a journal card.
- I deleted the sparkles and October element
- I used a large photo for my background.
- I added elements and used word strips for my journaling.
All of these layouts came together super fast and were so simple to create with Allison’s template, and I love how they turned out. I still used most of the items and design in the template, with only a few adjustments. I think it is so fantastic to use a template for multiple pages and love all of the different looks you can get. Check out the October Template Challenge thread in The Lilypad’s forum to see all of the wonderful way our community members are using the template!
