Welcome to the latest edition of the Hybrid Variety Show. This month we are taking on the challenge of triangles. You might notice that triangles are part of the current trend watch. Now is a great time to try your hand at something from the Trend Watch sale. Sarah created a hybrid layout using triangle elements. This page is so sweet and just super creative. Credits: Manic Monday Collab from Amy Wolff and Lynne Marie, Chalkies from Pink Reptile Designs, and Try-An-Angle from Heather Joyce. Here is what Sarah had to see about her creative process:
I love the clean look of the Try-An-Angle template set from Heather Joyce. I thought it would be fun to use my Silhouette to create a layout using one of the templates in the set. My first step was to resize everything to 8″ x 8″ and then trace and cut using the different shapes (in this case lots of triangles) in the template and filling the shapes with patterned paper from the Manic Monday Collab from Amy Wolff and Lynne Marie. After I resized the photo spot, I clipped the photo to the spot then printed. For the chevron pieces I did a trace and cut of an element from the kit and also filled the shape with a patterned paper that I felt worked well for adding a simple embellishment to my layout. Next, I print and cut the wordart from Chalkies by Pink Reptile Designs and used it as the title. The final step was assembly and journaling.
Jewelle created this adorable card. The stitched heart is the perfect finishing touch. Here is what Jewelle had to say about her process:
I love to sew, especially quilts! I was reminded of a patchwork quilt when I saw Amy Martin’s Shaped Up – Triangles. So of course I just had to use one of those templates! I decided to put a spin on her templates and use one to make a card. Whenever I’m struggling to come up with a great card design I turn to a template and adapt it to fit a card. That is one of my favorite tricks to use for hybrid scrapping! It really speeds up the design process! Once I filled Amy’s template with patterned papers I resized the template to fit on a 4 x 6 card. I designed the rest of my card using elements from Word Arrows from Designs by Lili, Vintage Valentine Collab from The LilyPad Designers, and Key to My Heart (Paper) from Sahlin Studio. After printing and assembling my card I used Thickers alphabet stickers to add some dimension to the card. I love the whimsical feel that this card has all because it is centered around the lovely triangle template from Amy Martin!
When we decided on the topic for The Hybrid Variety Show this month, my mind went into overdrive. I had so many ideas and I just could not stop playing with triangles. I even ended up dragging my kids into the triangle frenzy. While browsing the triangle trend watch category I was swooning over My Cup of Tea Papers from Allison Pennington. I knew right away that I wanted to use the lovely papers to create a fun craft project for my kids. The owl puppet was super fun to assemble and so easy to create. I used Newsy Banners from Kim Jensen to create this fun stitched banner. It went together in just minutes. When I saw the DIY Beware Hybrid Banner from Rachel Young I knew I wanted to create something outside of the Halloween theme. My plan was to cover the letters in each part of the banner, but I was delighted to find that the layered files are available in the product downloads. I was able to hide the letter layers in Photoshop leaving them blank so that I could embellish them after printing. I created bag toppers for some craft bags. I used some thickers from my paper stash to add a monogram letter to the center of each blank tag. I am giving these away as door prizes during my next craft session. I had the same idea when I found the DIY Trick or Treat Hybrid Banner by Rachel Young. The patterned papers on the banner were just so cute. I covered the letters with embellishments. This not only hides the Halloween theme, creating versatility for this product, but it also adds dimension to the banner. I decided to make gift tags from the banners. Super cute! Speaking of themes and Halloween. I immediately wanted to print the Halloween Banner from Jacque Larsen. Who can resist the cuteness? While this product is a banner, it is just as cute as a set of cards. I can’t wait until Halloween to give these out to some little goblins in my children’s classes. While browsing triangles I could not resist the Geo Cut Page Mats from Kim Jensen. I knew instantly I was going to create a mask/stencil to use in my art journal. I absolutely love the result. I used torn book pages and tried two different techniques. First I used pink and purple mist sprays over the stencil. I like the splattered appearance. Then I tried the same stencil using a purple ink pad. Again, the result is just what I was hoping for. While this is not truly a triangle, I did use triangle papers to create these cute sour cream goodie pouches. I printed papers from Sassy Pants Papers by Amy Wolff. These little pouches are so adorable and super easy to make. We hope you find some inspiration in all of the triangle fun. Hop on over to the forum and share your triangle inspired creations to the Trend Watch Challenge.
