I started to dislike Nicholas Spark books too... I loved the Notebook and the Wedding (the sequel) and I think one or two others, but the rest are all the same with a different name. I love Robyn Carr books (Virgin River author..) all of her books in various series - Sullivan's Crossings amongst others, are all very good. I love the Comoran Strike books by Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowlings) - except the last one (Ink Black Heart) as it was based on social media and the way the text was written in columns for the social media part.. 3 columns of convo on a page, it was hard to read.. the storyline itself was great but the social media part.. not so much. I also love the Kay Scarpetta Series by Patricia Cornwell... I have read all of her books (as she has another series too) except the book she wrote on Jack the Ripper... Right now I am re-reading Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon... the way she ended book 9 re Bees was a cliff hanger and it bothers me as she is in process of writing book 10 but she is now 71 and has too many books in the fire so to speak... writing excerpts of different characters side books and not concentrating on each book at a time. I just hope she finishes book 10 in the next year or so...
I love a twisty ending too. I read mostly mysteries and thrillers so twisty is what you hope for. But I can see that it wouldn’t be as much fun with a Nicholas Sparks book.
I know, right??? Great story... and then he dies for something totally idiotic... haven't touched a book of his since then...
I love Virgin River - can't wait for season 5 which is coming this fall... And Cormoran Strike is a great series - agree with about the Black Ink Heart - the social media posts were insane - I think I skimmed over most of them...
I love reading and read A LOT! I would not like that ending. I don't read ahead or check the last chapters though. I hated Gone Girl. Ugh. I'm at the age where if I am not into it, I'm ok just leaving it unfinished. I used to have a thing about finishing a book, but no longer. I'd rather read happier than force myself to finish a book. I read from romance, true crime, fantasy, supernatural, drama, comedy, and so many more.
Oh my gosh! That is awful to have a favorite character killed off in the last chapter like that! You wrote so beautifully about it! I can feel your anger and disappointment! I definitely do not read the last chapter first though. I prefer to be surprised and especially since I've read so many books, so not often that I'm actually surprised anymore, but I don't even read the synopsis of a book sometimes. If a friend tells me a book is good, I'll read it without even knowing what's it about, so I don't spoil anything!
I read on my Nook and mostly borrow eBooks from the library vs. buying B&N eBooks. I used to read the Harlequin books ... I had a subscription in the 70's for several series each month ... historical, suspense, etc. I'd think your local librarian would be able to help you choose new books to read. I have certain books that I've read over and over ... currently it's the Outlander series.
We don't have librarians anymore, everything is automated. The bigger libraries have an administrator who checks books in and out if the automated system isn't working, and puts books back on shelves, but can't discuss books - just point you to the relevant book section (e.g. fiction or non-fiction, suitable for teenagers etc etc).
OMG ... that's horrible! Librarians and assistants at the library is so important. Especially to help children.
I don't read the endings but I almost always check reviews of books before I read them, either on Amazon or Goodreads. I rarely read anything rated under a 4 and sometimes they give you a hint at what you are going to get. For Message in a Bottle, one review said: "the end SUCKED so hard it just pissed me off & any good feelings I'd had from this book were quickly forgotten." LOL
I'm so sorry. That's awful ... I can't imagine a library without a librarian who can help you, including recommending books.
I have never read the ending first. The only thing I have done aside from reading from cover to cover, is to skim through a book if I lose interest and then read the ending so at least I know how it finished. We all have different tastes and preferences in books. I liked Gone Girl. I can't remember which book by N. Sparks I read but I didn't find it to be that interesting and haven't read another of his since but if a book blurb of his catches my interest I'll give it a try.
I also borrow from my library. I also get a couple of daily newsletters that list books at a discounted price for the Kindle in the genre I like. A lot of times they are free. That's when I pick them up and if I end up liking the author I will not hesitate to buy more of their books. That's what the slush fund is for and I'm not buying as much scrapping stuff so there is more money for books! I also had the subscription
That is sad. I was just at my local library yesterday to look for something in the genealogy society collection and I saw at least 3 people working. That section is in a locked room and there is a note on the door to go to the desk for the key. (Luckily 2 ladies were in there and had the door propped open). They did a remodel in 2019 and I had been in to see it (wonder why...). I did see that they have auto checkout stations as well and they put in a drive-up window. I think you can get books through the website then pick them up. There were also drop off boxes. But they still have people for the person to person contact if needed.
That is so sad! If you tell me some books you liked, and hated, I'll ask my local librarian for you! Our library has a cool Let the Librarian pick books thing. So, you fill out a form, and tell them how many books, and they will pick some out. We did it with Munchkin and he found 2 new series he loves! It's so fabulous! Our local bookseller is awesome that way too. They are fabulous about recommending books, and you have to read to work there. Or at least, I assume you do, because they have read most of the recent books and can tell you if they liked it or not and why. And they are always recommending other books based on what you are picking up. I will admit, our library when Munchkin was little had a drive up drop box. It was awesome and helped me keep from having late fees! Our current library has one too. I hated the automated checkouts that our old libraries have had. They were often broken, or the books wouldn't scan right. Annoying!
I have read the ending a few times. Usually when I'm trying to decide if I want to keep reading or if I'm done. Usually, if I read the ending, I'm done with the book.
