So, I am starting to build up a template collection (perfect for hybrid scrapping and digital!) and wondered if everyone downloaded all the files for the templates? I know I want the PNG and PSD files, but do I really need to do the others?! LOL Yeah, such a newbie question!

I am strictly a digi scrapper, and use Photo Shop CS5. I download the TIFFs, as I can see the previews better, and I like how they save.
It really depends on your program.
newbie questions are my favorite, and I am sure more will chime in with answers, as you see we are all enablers to this great hobby

I never download the .tiff or the .png files. I only keep the.psd file & the Preview (the 600px) size one and ditch everything else.

I use PSE11 and only keep the TIFF files, again this is because the previews show in the folders whereas the psd files don't and I have to keep the preview as well. I think the pngs and page files (if any) are just for use with certain software so, as someone else has said, tell us what software you use and we will let you know what you need to keep!

I have a Mac and I can see the previews just fine for .psd, so I keep the .psd file.

I dump the .png files and the .tiff and the .page (for the old Creative Memory scrapbook software/Artisan) files.

Some people keep the .tiff because, like Anne said you can see the preview on a PC. Also, they are usually a smaller size than the .psd (if the designer saved it with the right compression).

I'm not terribly concerned about the size. When I first started using the files, I found the tiffs loaded and saved even slower on my computer so I stuck with the .psds. I don't want to change because if I sort or search my folder by file type, then the templates get confused and mixed up.

Ok, I have Photoshop (and PSE, which I don't really touch anymore), Lightroom and then I am hybrid, so I know I need the PNG files to make it easier for me to import into Silhouette software. I know the .page are for something I don't use, but tell me more about these .tiff things! LOL

I am on a Mac also, and don't plan on going to to PC! LOL So, maybe this answers my question!

I could have written this post! I also only keep the previews and the .psd file, and if the designer has given me the option to download just the .psd version of a template that's the only file I grab. Most of the time I use the Cover Flow view on my Mac, and .psd works great with it, and the rest of the time I'm in Lightroom which supports .psd files.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) allows layers (like a .psd), but as someone mentioned earlier can be smaller depending on the compression used. I'm not concerned about space (I never ditch my .psd files for my layouts!), so I just use a .psd.

Does anyone ever go from a Mac to a PC??? LOL

I used to be 'bi-lingual' when I was still working but no more! I do use the img2icns app to put the preview ON the folder and if I decide to put all the goodies from one designer in a folder, I'll put the photo of the designer ON that folder. I haven't done that for TLP yet as I'm still learning who is who.

I have figured out how to edit the folder to show the preview image, so I am good on that!!!! So it looks like I am sticking with the PSD's and the PNG's! LOL Now, to figure out how to tag to find things....which I know I need to get started on, because I am building quite the stash of digital products! LOL

@scrappyjedi what are you doing in Lightroom? Just curious!

I can't remember how to edit the folder to show the preview image. Can you explain it. I know it's easy I just don't remember

I switched from Mac to PC. It does happen.

I only kept PSDs on Mac. I was using software that did not open Tiffs as layered, so I never compared the two.
On PC I keep Tiffs because they're smaller and show the preview. I also save my own LOs as Tiff.

I use Lightroom to organize my digi stash and my photos, and to edit my photos.

Can you point to a post that might help me start doing that?! LOL

You can use the img2icns app Maureen mentioned. It's free. http://www.img2icnsapp.com

Or open the preview (in Preview or whatever). cmd-A (select all), cmd-C (copy)
With the folder selected, cmd-I (info), click on the folder icon up in the top left (I think it gets a blue outline when you do this, unless that's changed), cmd-V (paste)
It's a lot of steps but it goes pretty fast when you're used to it.

Thank you Lorry. That makes sense to me. I guess I thought it had to be different cuz it's a folder but it's not. Thanks so much. It will really help with templates as well as kits.

Ok, open the folder image and copy. Then, right click on file folder and hit "get info" when that pops open, then click on the folder at the top upper left and then hit paste. That will change it to the folder preview picture.

I used the "preview" method here too. I have all my kits and template packs set up like this. If it's just a freebie template/single, I ditch the folder and let the template hang out alone.

I now save TIFF only. I am on a PC. PSE Organizer will show me PSD previews, but the windows explorer will not.
I only download TIFF, if that's an option. I will typically place the preview image in the designer folder, instead of the template folder, only so I don't purchase it again, or to quickly choose something from a specific designer.

sounds like you'd be fine with PSD and PNG for your hybrid needs.

PC does not allow me to tag PSDs or PNG files. TIFF does allow tagging... I tag number of photo spots the designer intended (usually one specific color on their templates... gray, but not always). I can't get too complicated with that, because I could over analyze for hours.... I just do a quick glance and call it... "3 gray spots, 3 photos. Done."

I'm still deciding on what I could do to tag and further classify my templates, but can't get too complicated, because then I won't do it.
simple things maybe, like "lotsapaper" or "bigphoto" maybe. hahah.

@klee73010 I think we would be good friends!!!!

I know I need to figure out how to tag my supplies, which it's sounding like I could do in Lightroom? At least I was smart enough to create a folder specifically for LilyPad broken down by designer and then I am breaking it down further, by kit, action, template, etc.

Ekk, I just want to scrap!!! LOL
