Hello! 2019 is coming to an end and this is our last technique scrap for the year. Earlier this month, we learned how to direct the viewer's attention to a part of a photo using selective color. Along the same lines, today we are going to learn how to direct the viewer's attention using selective focus.

The most ideal way to achieve selective focus is in camera with a shallow depth of field (wide aperture) but hindsight is 20|20 and when we go to scrap our memories, sometimes we're just lucky to have a photo at all. So....today we will learn how to change the focus digitally. ***NOTE- there is no way to make a blurry photo sharp...sorry....we'll be going the other way - making a sharp photo blurry...selectively.

The instructions are for Photoshop, but the process is the same for PSE.

    Step 1: Select a photo
Ideally you want a photo that is in focus and might even seem busy or a photo where you want to isolate a subject from the background.

I chose a photo of my daughter's choir concert at Barnes and Noble. I want to have one of the photos on my page to highlight my daughter from the rest of the group and also from the books in the background.

    Step 2: Duplicate your photo

    go to layer->duplicate layer

Step 3: Blur the photo layer

There are many types of blur, but I only ever really use the "gaussian blur"
go to filter -> blur -> gaussian blur

There will be a pop-up window asking how much blur. I went with 10 pix, but it's personal preference on how much blur you want to add.

Step 4: Mask the area in focus.

go to layer-> layer mask -> hide all
    [IMG]
use the quick selection tool to select what you want in focus and then go to select -> inverse and then fill in the rest you want out of focus.

    Here are today's instructions:

*You MUST have a photo in which part of the photo is IN FOCUS and the rest of the photo is OUT OF FOCUS.

Interesting technique. I did have to search for a photo as I usually try to avoid cluttered backgrounds. And, I may have gotten carried away with the blur!

I hadn't planned on using this photo of the tree that I took on Christmas Eve, but I really like how it turned out. That glass pinecone is stunning! Another one for my DYD. :tree

I missed the chat, but I figured it out. To be honest, I really wish I had been there, as I could not figure out the directions, so I did it a different way.:headscratch:blush

I Am Familiar With This Concept...I Too Missed The Scrap...I Hurt My Foot Last Night...I Couldn't Walk On It At All...All Swollen & Sore...I Had To Keep It Up For Most Of The Day...I Couldn't Be Here Today Because Of That...It Is Still Really Sore & Super Swollen & Walking & Standing Is Difficult...But It Is Manageable For Now...At Least Enough To Make It To The Computer In My Craft Room...Thank You! For Making It A Slow Scrap Also...I Love Selective Focus...Now That Being Said...I Did Follow The Instructions...But Upon Completion...I'm Not Sure If You Can See Enough Of The Background Of My Photo Because Of The Flowers On Top...Hmmm...It Is The Merry Christmas Mug & Hand & I Blurred The Background...I Added The Cute Snow Bear After...He Is An Ornament Off Of The Christmas Tree...I Love Him!...He's So Cute!...
