    Hi,

I have a few videos that I want to take a still picture from. With busy kids it is sometimes easier for me to take a video and hope a frame is good than to put the camera on burst mode. I have used VLC to do that in the past. I am wondering if anyone has a better way?

I have done it a few times within Photoshop. I have Photoshop CS5. It works, but be aware that the resolution is not as good. But then again, a photo with poor resolution is better than none at all. Also be forewarned that you may have hundreds of layers. If you can limit the range of the video, that would help. You can also select every 25th or every 250th frame, etc., etc. There are numerous tutorials on the web. Here is one for you.

Also tagging @cfile as she does this and may have some helpful suggestions.

    Good luck!

I have my videos/movies transferred over to mp3 on my computer and as I watch the movie, (the same should be able to be done with movies from your iPhone), I do a "ctrl+print screen" keys on my laptop to capture the screen shot.. I have also stopped the movie and then used the "snip it tool" on windows to capture it also... I then just clone over the little arrows or line at the bottom. It works for me.

Here are some examples of pages I made with screen shots using 8mm movies where I took screen captures.

Hope this works as a different suggestion.

I use Lightroom. I play the video, pause where I want the screenshot, and tell it to Capture Frame.

Very cool and it worked however one question Courtney, when you tell it to capture frame, where does it go? I found that not doing anything so I just used the snipping tool, but was curious where I was supposed to be looking for the captured frame :) Thanks :)

It goes wherever the video is saved. If you right click and say "open in explorer" it should open the folder where the still is.

I'm always curious as to what the best way to do this is ... I'm not a huge video taker, but my husband is. He prefers videos to photos - so if I can't make an event I like to try to get a few stills from his videos too.

Great question and love all the different responses. Gonna try some of these! :)

It just goes next to the video itself as a separate image (within the filmstrip) as if you had made a virtual copy. But it makes a small jpg image. The actual file itself would be in the folder where the video is (you could right-click on the jpeg and choose Show in Finder).
