We had a major storm come through our area on Wednesday... lots of rain and lightning. One of the buildings damaged by a lightning strike was a theater/church where the Dallas Magic Clubs (DH is currently president) and the Dallas Young Magicians Club (DH and the kids go, I've been a couple of times) meet every month. A photo of the exterior was posted the night of the storm, and it was fairly unsettling.

But since the interior pictures went up, my stomach has been in knots. This is a shot of the Young Magicians at an event there last year. (The two blond kids in the middle are mine.)

The screen in the background of the photo above is in the right of the shot below (snagged from the theater's Facebook page).

There are lots more photos of the damage. It's just incredible to me that all of this happened from a lightning strike. SO grateful that no one was meeting there at the time of the storm. I can't imagine what would have happened. It was an interior room with no windows (the natural light in these is from the new gaping hole in the roof), so you would have expected it to be a fairly safe place to be in a storm. I'm still kind of in shock. :(

Oh wow! I am glad no one was hurt! Hope they can get it all fixed up so the club and kids have a place to practice their magic skills.

Yikes! I'm guessing the building is a total loss?!?!? Hope your family can find another place.

The church is hoping to rebuild. The current estimate is 2 to 6 months, but it's still very early, so who knows how accurate that is. The theater/church is in the middle of a long multi-business building. The other rooms that are part of the church (offices, art gallery, smaller meeting rooms) just have water damage. There is a big liquor store in the adjacent space that received no damage whatsoever. It's been a while since I've been over there, so I can't remember what's on the other end, but I believe they also had no damage.

They've found a restaurant with a back room that the kids can use for their meeting this month. Not sure if that will end up being a long term meeting place. Last I heard, they hadn't figured out a new place yet for the adults to meet. It's a larger group, so it's harder. They have a board meeting tonight (which was also supposed to have been at the theater/church, but is now at a member's home), so hopefully they can put their heads together and come up with something. They'd been meeting at this place for a couple of years, and they had a terrific setup for sound and projection and all that, so it's been really great for them. They even had staging equipment and such that the magic club owns stored there, which they can't get out right now, because the building is unsafe.

That is some incredible damage-from a lightening strike! I'm so glad no one was in there. Is there another meeting place they can go to in the meantime, besides going to the same building? (like a different church?)

That is very scary and very sad Kim. I would have thought the same thing - it should be relatively safe being an indoor room without windows. :(

Wow, hard to believe all that damage was caused by lightning! How scary!

Wow! That is so scary! Thank God no one was in there!!!

Wow! I really had no idea damage like that could occur from lightening. I always felt if I was in a building I'd be safe. That's unbelievable!

I'm so thankful no one was there and no one was hurt!

Yipes!! So scary Kim! So grateful to know that no one was hurt!!

That is so scary - what a relief that no one was there. I'm shocked at the amount of damage - I had no idea that a lightning strike could do such a thing.

I can't believe the amount of damage! Thank goodness everyone is ok. I hope they find a new place to meet and can rebuild real soon!

Oh my gosh, Kim! I'm so glad no one was hurt. So glad your family is OK. Be safe!
