Scanning!!

Taking photos...what a great idea!! I have tried this in the past and sometimes I get a terrible glare off the photo or you can see the reflection of the camera in the photo. Advise so that doesn't happen??

Thought I'd pass this info on:
My uncle has been scanning family photos for years now and he scans them at 1200 ppi so they can be enlarged and have good quality. Yes the files are big, but if you're going to all the work of scanning, you want to have high quality photos and leave yourself options. He said 600 ppi is the minimum resolution you'd want to scan them in at - and even that resolution limits your options for printing enlargements later.

Ugh. You are a brave soul. I keep thinking about sending ours out to a service, but haven't bit that bullet yet.

You go, girl!!!

I truly hate scanning and always swear I will send photos out. But I haven't. I've also heard as @keepscrappin says the minimum is 600dpi. Doing that on my scanner on the Cannon 3 in one is s l o w. While I don't have a dslr, my dil does and I think I could pay the younger granddaughter (14) to do some with the right instructions.

hello ladies.... sorry wasn't around all day, I haven't been feeling all too well and there is a LOT of scrapping to do and organizing for the weekend!!!!!! we will be having fun, hope you all will join us!!!!

I will put together the tutorial after iNSD is gone, so next week I ll have it ready for you, not much technicallity as I did it all by guessing/trial and error kind of thing!

Good for you for taking that on! I've scanned and just photographed some important ones but not many. There are a few pics from my childhood (and from my parents' and grandparents' lives) that I'd love to digitally capture.

My thing is figuring out how to digitally copy some old 8mm home films my grandpa took when my mom and her siblings were kids. I don't have any of the equipment to run the films, much less transfer them to a computer.
what Court said in her reply: send it out. Sarita used to work for Kodak here locally, a small printing outlet....they did it and it wasn't all that expensive, but well worth it, I too, like Courtney, had bought one of those transfer devices and was disappointed... ask around, google your area even...I am sure you must have someone who does it!!!

There's a couple of scanning places that will do that for you. We bought a home kit to transfer vhs to DVD, and were bummed by the quality. So we are planning on sending them out now.
yes, same, we bought a couple of devices and were so disssapointed ended up paying Kodak to transfer the films....

@MrsPeel reminded me of my use of the camera instead of the scanner when I wanted to make digital backups of my hand-written journals from childhood to young adulthood a couple of years ago. I have two boxes full of these journals. I spent a month a couple of years ago taking photos of every full page spread and the front covers. I did it on my backyard deck where I would have good even lighting, laying the journal on a solid color towel underneath my camera, which I attached to a tripod. The tripod made it easy because once I had it set up, I just needed to turn the page, hit the shutter, turn the page, hit the shutter . . .

Now that I think about it, a remote for the camera would have allowed me to stay seated instead of getting up and down repeatedly between turning pages and hitting the shutter -- though it was good exercise! :D

Michelle, I ll talk/send you a pm next week, once iNSD is finished, I can include your way in the post/tutorial -
a team effort always gets the best results!!!! :) you know I went for the camera because we didn't have a scanner, then when we did have one and I compared the quality, you always win with the camera!!!! :)

I will be writing a post after iNSD is gone. Next week I ll give you all the tips, the step by step I did to get the best :)
