Rachel's Mixed Media Challenge - May 2024 - CLOSED

Hello! Happy May!

I'm new to Rachel's Mixed Media team, but will be bringing you the monthly challenge moving forward (be gentle with me :giggle).

Each month through 2024, a broad theme will be provided for the challenge and you can interpret these themes as literally or as loosely and abstractly as you wish.

If you’d like to learn something specific please let us know!

For this month's theme, in keeping with NSD (scrapping and memorykeeping), we'd like you to focus on:

-Everyday occasions
-Little details
-Overlooked moments
-Unexpected joys
-The constants
-Same stuff, different day

Tips/Technique/Tutorial:
With each challenge, a tip/technique/tutorial will be included. There is no pressure to incorporate the tip/technique/tutorial into your challenge page, the choice is entirely yours.

My tip for this month is to focus on using numbers as both a design element AND a symbol. Rachel almost always includes a good number in her kits... or she has a piece or bit of ephemera that has a number on it. I love seeing what those are and how I can incorporate them into my page to add a different layer of meaning into my page. It may not be something that anyone else would realize or notice, but there are so many different ways to include numbers in a meaningful way. For example... an age, a special date, a lucky number, a celebratory number, a favorite number, even numerology if that floats your boat. And I think it is a cool idea to just add the number to your page in a random and artsy way, focusing on the design side... not making it obvious that you're including the number as a stand-in (like instead of word art or title).

There are so many small moments during our lives that we can capture with different numbers, it is an easy way to incorporate them into the page.

I chose to do a page about my grandparents before they got married and started a family. Just a regular couple enjoying an afternoon together.




Here are a couple of other examples.

Ann-Sofie created this lovely page about an unexpected joy, "This flower, alpine pennycress, has been on my want to see list for years and suddenly there it was during a hike."

And this lovely from Rachel. She said, "The way the sunlight was catching Mackenzie's hair and face at 8am in the morning and her cute little bed hair made me take this little candid snap as she was looking at me, the number ephemera is her age."

Challenge Requirements:
  • Create a new page using one of the prompts
  • Use at least 75% of Rachel's Product currently available in her LilyPad shop.
  • Any remaining percentage must be product from another current LilyPad designer. This could also include retired products from Rachel or the other current LilyPad designer.
  • Hybrid projects are also welcome and the same product rules apply. Where digital products are used in a hybrid project they must all come from current LilyPad designers, and at least 75% must be Rachel's Product.
  • Upload your layout to the Rachel Jefferies Designs Gallery at the LilyPad with your product credits.
  • For your challenge entry to be counted, you MUST upload your finished layout to this thread. Please link your gallery image to your post in this thread, as it helps us leave love on your layout (and validate your project).
  • No double-dipping… your layout must be created for this challenge only, no others.
  • You must create a NEW layout for this challenge.
  • This challenge will remain open for the monthly coupons through May 31st, 2024
Prizes:
  • All participants who post their page during the challenge month by the end of month deadline and meet the criteria will be eligible for a coupon of 15% off their next order (from Rachel's shop) of $10 or more.
  • ONE lucky random winner who posts their page during the challenge month by the end of month deadline and meets the criteria will receive a $8.00 coupon for Rachel's Shop here at the LilyPad!
  • By completing ALL twelve of Rachel's Mixed Media Challenges at the LilyPad in 2024, this will give you the chance to win a $25 coupon to her shop!
    • In order to be eligible for $25 Coupon to Rachel's shop you will need to do the following:
      • Complete ALL twelve of Rachel's Mixed Media Challenges at the LilyPad in 2024 by December 31, 2024 by 1159 PM PDT.
      • Post the challenge layout in the appropriate challenge month thread in Rachel Jefferies Challenge Threads (for example: January Challenge layout must be posted in the January Challenge thread that is linked back to the gallery--even if you complete it in November, it still must be posted in the January Thread).

Thank you for the challenge, I focused on - Everyday occasions
Our move was exhausted and emotional, but we are slowly settling in. We love discovering our new neighbourhood on our daily walks with Tygo.
I used a number stamp to create a vertical repetition.

Here's my take on this challenge, with today's unexpected joy : receiving a free coupon for a worshop I was interested in but couldn't afford ! I though it was very appropriate with the tip / technique / tutorial or the month since the workshop is about an organizational system that relies on numbers. I altered the paper so that there's a 11 in the white circle instead of just one and that makes it for today's date :)

Ohmygosh... how funny. I saw this page over at Digitalscrapbook and it jumped out at me. I loved it and knew it had to be Rachel's products. I didn't realize it was for this challenge! I'm so glad you won a chance at a workshop, and it is perfect that it has to do with numbers. You'll have to let us know how it goes once you finish!
 
I created this layout about a special but everyday occasion with three friends from high school as part of my Week in the Life project. In the more than 30 years we've been getting together in this way this is the first time we were together during WITL documentation which gives me a chance to include more details.

 
Decided to go with a lunch - you know, nothing fancy, just some fried leftovers. But isn't that just one of the ordinary things, that are really something special. I love this - simple & yummy. Added the numbers 8 & 5 to emphasize the date the photo was taken.
