******* Rachel Jefferies April 2023 Mixed Media Challenge *******

April's challenge is all about having fun with Rachel's amazing mixed media papers! I want you to PLAY & HAVE FUN! Now don't worry, you can do this! It may sound intimidating, but it's really not. Mixed media scrapping isn't hard, we are just overthinking it. MM is just a matter of incorporating mixed media products and/or techniques into our layouts. Plus, Rachel has done most of the work for us. :agree

In the January 2023 Challenge, Aly gave some great tips regarding the placement of photos using the rule of thirds. I'd like to add to those tips and say, "let the mixed media background paper determine where you place your photos/clusters". Look for natural areas where there's either a break in the design or the pieces of the design intersect. Pile your photo(s)/clusters on top of an existing collage to make it look like it was always there. Don't be afraid to tweak things to make them your own, but most of all have fun and enjoy the process.

    Examples:

Let me walk you through a couple of layouts to show you what I mean when I say Rachel has done most of the work for us with her products.

    2023_04_mmPaperChallenge_01.jpg

Building collages is a common mixed media technique, so I started with a collage paper from Rachel's Enduring: Mixed Media Collages. I loved that it had collage pieces on the top and bottom of the right side with an area in the middle that could hold photo(s).

Next I picked a template (Stampalicious Layered Template Freebie March '22) that had the photo on the right side. I tweaked the template a bit and moved the photo/cluster up to be between the top and bottom collage pieces on the background paper.

Then I scrapped as usual adding my photo, paints, elements, title, etc; and just like that my page was complete! :agree

Here's another example of letting the background paper determine the design.

    2023_04_mmPaperChallenge_02.jpg
I started with the Stampalicious: Heathland templates.

Then, I picked the circle paper from Give Yourself Permission. I loved all the circles, but rotated it 90 degrees to the right so the band portion without circles ran top to bottom.

I then moved the photo/cluster from the template up and to the right, so it fit in the band portion of the paper.

Next, I used the elliptical marquee tool to cut out three circles from the background paper (one on the left and two on the right) to create flow down through the layout. Tip: hold down the shift key while selecting the circle portions to get a true circular selection.

Then, I added a colored paper and sequins below the cut out circles to show through and give more color to the layout.

Last, I embellished the layout pretty much according to the template. I used teal and pink colored elements to create flow down through the layout. It's as simple as that... easy peasy, right! :agree

Now it's your turn to create a mixed media layout featuring Rachel's paper products.

    Challenge Requirements:
    • Create a new scrapbook layout or creative project using Rachel's mixed media paper products AND letting the mm background paper determine/support your design.
    • Please TELL us how the mixed media pattern helped determine your layout design.
    • RJ templates are allowed, but not required.
    • Photos are optional.
    • Use at least 75% of Rachel's Product. Any remaining percentage must be product from another current TLP designer.
    • The product can be currently available in the TLP Shop or be retired products from Rachel or a current TLP designer.
    • Hybrid projects are also welcome and the same product rules apply. Where digital products are used in a hybrid project they must all come from current The LilyPad designers, and at least 75% must be Rachel's Product.
    • Upload your layout to the Rachel Jefferies Designs Gallery at TLP with your product credits.
    • For your challenge entry to be counted, you MUST upload your finished layout to this thread. Please link your gallery image to your post in this thread, as it helps us leave love on your layout (and validate your project).
    • No double-dipping… your layout must be created for this challenge only, no others. You must create a NEW layout for this challenge.
    • This challenge will remain open for the monthly coupons until April 30, 2023.

I began with this background paper, turned it a quarter and made two frames that fit in the cut outs on the paper.

I used one of Rachel's templates Hello There and a mixed media paper from the Pocket Art Signature Kit. I used the color on the background and the placement of the stamps and doodles to place the template to create a flowing feeling. Then I went looking for a photo to match the word art piece.

I used the Viridian collection. Picked this paper:
    bg.jpg
Picked it cuz I liked the diary feeling of the page. Combined it with this template from the collection:
    temp.jpg
Moved the photo cluster up to the cluster on the collage paper, and built 2 clusters around the clusters on the paper. Since I wanted to emphacize the diary feel, I decorated the left side, and then wrote a diary entry on the right side.

    Here's my finished layout:

Here's my page. I used the paper from Riding the Rails - City Wall Backgrounds. The tear in the paper inspired me to tuck my photo into it and then put my cluster at the bottom of the tear.

thank you for the challenge. I used this paper, and lined my photos up along the top part of the collage. Then I built up the brush layers and the finishing elements.

    I used:
    Stampalicious: Willow Template (Retired)
    Screen Shot 2023-04-15 at 1.04.00 PM.png
    Backgrounds:
I blended these two backgrounds together from Rachel Jefferies | Disconnected Collages

    Screen Shot 2023-04-15 at 1.03.21 PM.png Screen Shot 2023-04-15 at 1.03.08 PM.png

I pulled the picture frame and other elements from the template to the right on top of the other collages on the papers. I also used the arc of the string to scatter my beads and point to the flower cluster.

I picked this background paper (from CC - this is me) because I liked the bright painted center with the dark edges around it.
