Using the Travel Notebook main template from the "Christmas in July" 10 day challenge I made my pages look like a folded book by adding some shadowing on the center "spine". Here is my example: There are several ways to obtain this folded look easily in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. One way to do it is to add a 50% gray fill layer over the bg paper. Start with your free TN template obtained from the "Christmas in July" 10 day challenge choose your a paper (paper in example is PRD's It's Cold Outside Paper 04) to clip to the template to use as your backgound. in the layer pallet, add a new layer over your paper layer clip the new layer to your paper layer on the new layer go to Edit>Fill and from the drop down select 50%gray change the blend mode of the 50% gray layer in the layer pallet to overlay now with the color black and using a soft round brush at the top right edge of the left side of the 50% gray layer hold your brush at the top and holding the shift button drag your brush down to the bottom right edge of the paper. That gives the shading on the edge to appear bent. This shows how the line looks on the 50% gray fill layer with the normal blend mode (right side) and with the overlay mode on the left. If you want it darker, while still holding down the shift key with the brush when you get to the bottom, just take your brush and place it at the top.. this will keep the line straight (holding the shift) and will give you a darker line each time. Add your shadow to the template layer as you normally would. I have seperated my shadow so I could manipulate it.. now decorate your pages as you wish. You can also do this 2 additional ways.. you can burn the edge of your paper making sure the burn tool is set at 50% or lower and burn the edge you can also get the style by Mommyish called Folded which can be applied and will fold your paper https://the-lilypad.com/store/CU-Stylin-67-Folded.html . Leah also has a video to show exactly how to use her style here: **I used the 50% gray method of painting the line but wanted a little more definition so I also used Leah/Mommyish's Folded style and adjusted the gradient for mine.** I recommend the Mommyish Folded style as it is a click and done process
As always, @cfile thank you for the tutorial. I first learned about using a 50% gray layer for dodging and burning from you, and it is now my go to technique.
This is fabulous @cfile ... and your book really does look like the real thing! Fantastic shadowing and such a helpful tutorial!
Thank you Marilyn That sweet coomment means more to me than you know Thanks Jenn Thank you for the suggestion @IntenseMagic Jan @dagi Dagi - Hugs
@cfile I love this technique. I want to learn it to make my TN more gorgeous and real. I will try it for my next TN page. Thanks so much.
You are so welcome Marijke! You are so welcome! I look forward to seeing your page You are welcome Emma! Glad I could help!
Thanks so much, Christa! I was wondering how you got this look - your pages in the gallery are fabulous!! You're the best!
Oh, Christa, you have some many tricks up your sleeve (or should I say how knowledgeable you are in using the tools of Photoshop?) Thanks for sharing this one with us. I hope you will continue to write and share tutorials with us.
@cfile you rocked this tutorial!! I saw this effect on your TN and I thought it was some template or action! it's perfection, thank you for teaching us!!
Thanks for the tutorial! For my page I used those overlays by SWL, but I wanted to learn how to make that effect.
@cfile help? mine looks horrible? I even went and got Liz's overlays... still blah.. I admit I am horrible at reading instructions, I always forget some important ingrediant.. here is a horrible screen shot of my journal page just so ugly
@AnneofAlamo I think Christa has the grey layers above her papers/photos. You want the effect over them. Try that?
I did above also, and it still looks like crapola? I am gonna get out of my robe...nbhahahha, way too much scrap last 48 hours... shower and eat and reread..bhah
