    Rotoscoping Effect

The entries for this challenge have been outstanding!!!
:circlesThe winner of the $5 coupon is
    Fannou.

Congrats Fannou - I'll send you the coupon code via pm :)

Welcome to this month's technique challenge, where we'll be applying a rotoscope effect to part of a photo, with the help of a tutorial which I found on Photoshop Essentials.

Rotoscoping is when artists trace over live-action film, frame by frame, to create an animation. We can adapt this technique to create a sort of comic book type subject with the background of the photo remaining unaltered.

So your challenge is to apply a rotoscope effect to the subject of your photo and then use that photo in a layout.

Below you will see the before and after photos using the technique, and then the layout created with the finished effect. For my layout I used NBK's Eat Pray Love collection.

    TUTORIAL
You can find a more detailed version of this tutorial HERE
    1. Make a selection around your subject
    2. Copy the selection to a new layer.
    3. Apply the Poster Edges filter to the new layer. (Filter/Filter Gallery/Poster Edges)
NB: You may need to use the minus function at the bottom left of the preview window to get your selection to show up in the preview panel. Also make sure the 'eye' icon is checked, to activate the filter.

    4. Add a black stroke around the main subject.
    5. Add a drop shadow. (I omitted this step and the next because my subject already had a shadow in the original photo).
    6. Clean up any unwanted shadow areas (if necessary).
    And that's it!

Here are some sample pages from the CT. Firstly from Marie-Claire, using Love Forever.

From Cindy using Art & Nature.

and from Trish. She used NBKDesign's artTherapy No2

I usually don't care to do challenges that involve having to figure out how to do techniques, but I enjoyed this one! It took me a while to find the Poster Edges in PSCC 2018, but after searching the web, I finally found it!!! YAY! The photo I used wasn't very good quality. In retrospect, I should have chosen a better one! Also, I didn't think I had enough of NBK's products to complete a layout, but it turns out I had more than I thought. Anyway, thank you for the really fun challenge!

I've used poster edges before, but never on a selection of a photo. This was fun and a great effect! Thanks for the challenge!

I'm so bowled over by all these fabulous layouts, I want to go and make another one! I did have another challenge planned, but then decided it was too complex. So I'm glad I changed to this one :)
