Hello my fellow digi friends! CT member Esther, here with my first challenge here at NBK-Design. In the U.S. Spring has Sprung! While I love every season for various different reasons, it’s Spring that causes me to pause and reflect. Spring reminds us that this is the time of renewal and when you look around, nature shows us that that the cold dark earth breaks forth and is bursting in color and renewed hope. This month, we are going pause and become one with nature in a “less is more” tone on tone pocket style page layout. Go ahead and find one your favorite photo of a nature scene (with our without people or pets/animals-it’s up to you).

Have fun with this and if it helps--some options to consider are blend modes, Nicole's Toolboxes, out of box frames, artsy bits and pieces or even Nicole’s Clean Pocket Page Templates.

Rules:
  1. Chose your favorite photo of a natures scene (with our without people or pets/animals-it’s up to you). Only use one photo.
  2. Create a clean pocket style layout, make your own pocket page style or feel free to use on of Nicole’s Clean Pocket Page Templates
  3. For the tone on tone look, select colors that are similar to the main color in your photo. If you choose to create a pocket style layered on top of a back ground paper, make sure the background paper is slightly different in shade so that I’m able to tell the difference in the 2 colors.
  4. The background paper(s) should not be super busy, patterns are ok but they do need to be soft and subtle.
  5. How you use and place the photo is up to you, just keep in mind that the photo should “be the focal point” of the layout.
  6. Add minimal elements of your choice, keep in mind that the elements should not take away from the photo (remember, we are becoming one with nature, the elements used should almost be an extension of the photo).
  7. You may add journaling and/or word if you wish, just keep in mind it should not take away from the photo.

Here’s my layout that I created. I choose to make my pocket page style from scratch. My background layer and my individual “pocket” layer looks were all created by using the color and textures style from the Wanderlust Collection, combined with some blend modes, page blender and magic light overlay. For my photo presentation, I used an OOB frame from the Garden of Eden Collection. My word art and 2 other elements that I used are also from the Wanderlust Collection.

Here’s another layout that I did a while back, that actually prompted this whole challenge for me. Here I used a mixed media paper and then applied an overlay that I recolored and masked to give each of my square pockets a little bit of distinction. For this layout, I only used White Christmas with my photo (no template for the pocket style).

While the rest of the world is in the 'spring has sprung' mode, here in Jakarta I long for snow... and although I live in what can only be described as tropical paradise and have a ton of gorgeous beach photos, my current favorite nature photo is this one... taken during our skiing holiday in the Alps back in 2019.

I know it looks like I used a template but I didn't. I created the pocket layout from scratch - inspired by Nicole's storybook templates (and having consulted Pinterest for aditional boost to my creativity) and spent a couple of days leisurely experimenting with shadows and papers... Suprpisingly, the paper from a beach-themed kit fit my snow photo best... go figure...
