Melons. Growing up, we commonly had cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon. And since that was my familiar territory, it tended to be what I bought at the store. Then....I got to taste a melon that looked like a cross between pineapple and watermelon. It was so good!! Unfortunately, the giver didn't know what it was - her DH had gotten it from the commissary on base. Sigh... But, in search of that melon, we have randomly picked out some at the store. We started with "Hami". It's delicious! The next time we went to the store, munchkin asked to pick out a Santa Claus melon, and DH choose a canary melon. I grabbed another Hami. The Santa Claus was very juicy and quite sweet. The canary is on the menu tonight. How about you? Do you stick to certain melons? Do you experiment? What's your favorite melon?
Those really look yummy, Courtney!! I love mangoes - are they a melon? Of course, cantaloupe and watermelon are faves, too. This is mango country - they have huge mango festivals here at certain times of the year.
I have always loved cantaloupe the best. I do not buy much fruit at all anymore at all with 50% of our household eating low carb most of the time.
When I delivered for the farm, they grew watermelon, canary melon, and sprite melons. I was never brave enough to try the canary melon as I don't like cantaloupe or honeydew. The sprite melon is about the size of a large softball and is white inside with a white/cream outside. I would describe it like a cross between a pear and a melon. Let us know what you think of the canary.
I'm a watermelon girl all the way.... LOVE IT! I don't care much for cantaloupe or honeydew and I have never even heard of the other kinds of melons. I must live under a rock... hehe!
When I went to China as a teenager, we ate winter melon for a month. To this day, melons are not my favorite. I will eat melon, but it's not my 1st choice. Funny though, whenever I go to Quickly, I always get a cantaloupe slush. Did you know a melon is technically a berry?
I love watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, etc. I will try any variety. The best watermelons I ever had my grandma grew in her garden. Just plain old watermelon. Funny story: I told my sister the tale that if you swallow watermelon seeds, they grow in your tummy. We were having a family dinner, and I pointed at a great-aunt that looked like she was 9 months pregnant for the entire time I knew her as proof of this tale. My sister believed that . . . and it took her forever to eat watermelon because she was a nutso about not eating the seeds. Bwahahahahaha! She can laugh about it now, but I can still see her eyeing me sideways when we talk about it. To be fair, she was irritating as all snot, so I had my ways of torturing her right back. LOL
Cantaloupe is my favorite, and I like honeydew. I do not like watermelon at all. I don't even like anything watermelon flavored. I have not experimented much with different melons, but I'm thinking I need to try some others!
No one in my family likes any melons for the most part. My son kind of likes watermelon about once a year. I would eat cantaloupe if I had someone to share it with.
We love Watermelon & Honey Dew these were the ones I grew up with, I didn't know Cantaloupe until I went to Spain, we buy it often here too. I'm quiet sure I have seen other varieties at some point but never bought.... oh Sarita and I would be in heaven with Mango Festivals!!! and no, is not a melon, it is fruit of a tree (the Mango) we are fanatic for Watermelon too!!!! I didn't!!!!! LOL I grew up with the story about the watermelon seeds...and also the myth that you couldn't mix watermelon with milk, I can't remember what they were saying happened if you did, but I know for ages I couldn't get the o idea of mixing the two!!!!
My husband and daughter enjoy watermelon but that is the only melon we do in our house. My daughter is severely allergic to dust. When fruits such as cantaloupe and kiwi have a rough outer surface with grooves, it tends to be a food she cannot have. Dust Particles get trapped in those grooves and when we cut the fruit it transfers from the outside to the fruit no matter how much we wash the outside first. When she eats fruit that has gotten dust on it, her throat feels like it is closing up. I am sure there are more melons we can do, but after several that made her have reactions, she isn’t exactly on board with trying more.
I love melon, but I grew up with it being a main item that is grown locally and there is nothing like picking it up from the farmer, being picked fresh that day. The flavors are so much better and you don’t have that hardness that comes from the grocery store ones. We even have a Melon Festival every year! https://www.howellmelonfestival.com/ I remember as a child my dad would stop at the farm on the way home from work pick up fresh melons cut them in quarters and we would each get a quarter of a melon with a scoop of vanilla ice cream! So good!
The local milkshake store has a watermelon version during July/August. I tried it - nope and nope - watermelon and milk/cream do not mix well in my opinion. Now a frozen watermelon sorbet is good.
I do not like cantaloupe or honeydew. I do love a good watermelon though. My sister just house/dog sat for us this last weekend and left a good amount of watermelon in our fridge. I can't wait to bust it open. I'll have to check out those interesting melons. That photo looks like it is from Sprouts so I'll check there.
I prefer cantaloupe and watermelon. I am not a huge honeydew fan! I believe you had a yellow watermelon. They are sold nearby and usually are yummy, with a sweeter flavor, and almost as if it has a honey flavor. VERY yum!
