Sometimes, facing the fear of the blank page can be daunting. I know for me, there are times when I really want to make a page, but all of the supplies and ideas jumbled inside of my head make it difficult to start. That is when using a prompt can really help. Some people may think that prompts are limiting or don't allow you to be creative, but I'm hopeful that it isn't true for most. Instead of thinking of it as a limitation, you could choose to see it as opening the creative doors.
Prompts allow you the freedom to begin a new adventure. If you use a prompt as a springboard into art journaling, you can also be inspired in other directions. Use a prompt as a brainstorming session. Take one prompt and quickly write down as many things as you can that pop into your head regarding the prompt or any other associations that come up.
Let's say you find a prompt about a favorite song. You could use the lyrics from the song. You could use just the title of the song as a title for your page. You could create a playlist on your journal page. You could think about a favorite song from any point in your life and how it stirs up memories. You could take a page in a political direction and talk about meaning/culture behind the song, lyrics or even about the artist who performs the song. You could create a musical timeline. You could imagine you have synesthesia and create a page based on colors, sounds and symbols that you hear in a particular song. You could create a page imagining your canvas as a backdrop for a scene from a music video you could imagine for the song. The possibilities are endless.
So today's technique challenge is to take one (or more) of the following prompts, brainstorm for five minutes about what comes up for you with one of the prompts, and then create a page from there.
Here are some prompts to get you started:
• Goodbye doesn't mean forever...
• Favorite moments of 2015 (so far)
• Journal a favorite cocktail/mocktail recipe
• Current top 5 favorites (could be anything from scrap products to makeup, apps, outfits, food, movies, songs, celebrity crushes, etc.)
• "The only thing I know is this: I am full of wounds and still standing on my feet." Nikos Kazantakis
• Laughter is an instant vacation.
• Create a page with an animal, some scribbles/doodles, and paint.
I'm excited to see what you can come up with.
