June Art Journal Muse Week 3 - New Age/Celtic Music
Hi everyone and welcome to week 4 of our June Muse challenge which centered on different types of music. This week we are going to look at the Celtic/New Age genre. Like most genres you will find further collectives within it like folk music, traditional Irish, Celtic punk, Celtic rock, comtemporary Celtic and so on.
While I love listening to all types of music (save Jazz, that just doesn't do anything for me!
) like my faves Pink Floyd, Stevie Nicks, Moody Blues, and Supertramp, I am also drawn to this Celtic/New Age music as well. I love the storytelling in these Celtic type songs as they are often based on much older stories or poems that have been handed down through the ages. The music itself is hauntingly beautiful and I just love the sound of the Irish Uilleann pipes. Some of my favorite artists in this genre include: Enya, Celtic Woman, Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, The Corrs and Sinéad O'Connor. If you are interested, here are four songs of these artists if you would like to have a listen, just copy and paste the bold text into Youtube. (couldn't add the links as we are not really allowed to link to outside sites.
)Enya - May It Be (Offical song from Lord of the Rings)
Clannad - I Will Find You (Theme from The Last Of The Mochicans)
Loreena McKennitt - Bonny Portmore (from the original Highlander movie with Sean Connery in it)
Celtic Woman - You Raise Me Up
Week 4 Challenge: The challenge this week is to create a layout based on something to do with this genre of music, New Age/Celtic. Your page topic however can be about anything you want to scrap about. Please let me know here in the thread what you used as your inspiration.
Here are some suggestions of getting started:
- Listen to one of the songs listed above and create a layout based on what you felt as you listened to it.
- Perhaps look at the lyrics and see if a line or two 'speaks' to you and create a page based on that. (Just Google the song title and artist name)
- Use the inspiration board I have included below which shows some album covers for some of the artists named above - find something that speaks to you, whether it is the album cover design, the color palette, the typography used or however else they might inspire you.
Here is my page:
I based my page on a song called Stolen Child, sung by Loreena McKennitt. The words are from an old poem by William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), however Loreena wrote the music for the song. I have always loved the hauntingly beautiful melody which adds to the overall feeling of sadness and melancholy that the words portray. No doubt the original poem was based on the Irish and Scottish mythologies of old that told of how fairies would often come to take a human child back to their faery realm and replace it with a changeling.
I was also inspired by the colours shown in the middle album cover above for the Celtic Woman.
Credits are in the gallery.
Loreena's rendition can be seen here if you would like to listen to it: (do not include the red H in the link below to go to youtube to watch the video)
