i found this difficult. i really am not that used to using brushes i guess. i do use blending modes. i see some layout that came out great and i would love the see the layers or someone do a video how they used the brushes and paints so i really learned more. I just tried my best but would love to really understand what others did to make such great layouts cause i dont think i understood

Thank you for this awesome challenge! I have never used this technique! Wow it's addicting! And thank you to @NBK-Design for the fantastic mini kit! Very generous indeed. I started with a black and white photo and then used the following:
-paintstroke paint dark cream color burn
    -paintstroke 3 brown hard light
    -paintstroke 2 pink screen
    -paintstroke 4 cream overlay
    -paintstroke Red yellow multiply
I used the canvas paper over my photo and used a color burn blend mode. I used various paint stokes to create the mask for my photo on the page.

    Day 27: Paintstroke Picture
Use paint/gesso/paint texture and blend modes to make photo look painted/paint textured. Mimic textures left behind from a brush.
Use at least 3 items from NBK paint stroke kit provided.

    I used:
    OilPaint Paper from NBK Kit
Paint Stroke 2 on photo - soft light
Paint Stroke 5 on photo - soft light
Gesso Paint 1 (gray at top of photo / paper)
Gesso Paint 1 (white at bottom of pocket/paper)

Other paper and elements from A. Pennington Not Pictured Kit

Most people seem to love this and there are many beautiful layouts in the gallery. Some just "found" this and are loving playing around with it. I just don't "get" it. This isn't my idea of play, at least not FUN play. I felt like I was wandering around in the desert, grabbing up "stuff" and throwing it against a canvas to see what would stick. Some people seemed to enjoy this. I didn't. [but that's what challenges are for]. Get through it and move on. Don't look back.

YES! 100% yes, that's what I did in my example. After adding all that texture my example didn't seem right to me so the mask was the finishing touch!

oh I am usually really horrible at this...but the key to this is laying the gesso or strokes on top of your photo...then play with blends...I had never done it...and admit to reading it in the back room and thinking eek! I will fail, I will fail.
I sat down this morning with a big cup of coffee and tee hee bowl of fried rice....
it was fun, and the things in this freebie are really cool, the paper and everything. I will be on and off most of the night, feel free to buzz me if you get stuck! ♥

This technique was perfect for this photo! It was on my son's swimming FB page and was really low resolution, but I still wanted to scrap it! :agree

    I used Paint strokes 6, 7 & 8 and Drops 5 to make a photo mask
    I also used Drops 1, 2, 3 & 4 blended into background
Paintstroke 9 with glitter style added
    Gesso 6, 7, 8 & 9 to soften edges of photo mask

These brushes have special features (or settings), they might rotate, they might multiply and create scattering. In addition if you are using a tablet like a wacom you can control the pressure of the brushes and it behaves kind of a real brush.

Here is a video by one of NBK's CT gals:

In the original post you will see a pulldown menu that shows where the blend modes are. You just need to make your paintstroke layer ACTIVE and then using the pull down menu you can change the blend more.

You've got this! Play around with it, remember you don't have to commit to anything, that's what the UNDO it's for!

Ok I was really grumpy about this because Gimp brush work doesn't play the same as Photoshop, but in the end it worked out. I mostly stuck to overlay mode and made a sandwich out of all the layers.

I used at least 4 different brushes (I didn't think to notice as I was working and had to go back and remember what each one looks like): gesso 9, and paintstrokes 6, 9, and 10. I also used the canvas background (twice - as a background and an overlay, top and bottom of the sandwich)
