How Often Do You Replace Your Computer?

meaning you "don't" restart daily?! Ours just goes to sleep and I restart when there are updates. I did upgrade to Sierra OX, but I basically wait until the it seems like it's time for the next OX to come out! LOL I am always afraid the updates will mess with my printers and Silhouette!

No, I DO restart daily. And any time my computer gets sluggish.

Would the increased speed help with the working of Photoshop and Lightroom aka CC?
Internet speed: no. It would help with the CC updates, but not the day to day usage.
RAM: yes.
The memory I was looking at was the Crucial,
Yes! I buy crucial. I usually buy it from Amazon because it's the same price, and I'm impatient. But I buy crucial. My brother, the network computer geek who builds computers uses crucial, and swears by it.
My son wants to game on my computer and I'm like NOOOO you are NOT touching it!
Don't do it! I hate having to share our desktop with DH. And yes, I know it's ours, but he has the PS4 and Xbox too! I don't wanna share.....

To the original question: when things break that are too hard or too expensive to fix. We replaced our XP laptop in 2013 finally because it really hated running PSE11. It would do it, but slowly.... So munchkin uses it for YouTube and online.
I switched that 2013 laptop with DH's 2013 laptop because the USBs attached to the motherboard died.
But now I use the desktop as often as possible! It was custom built for us, and rocks.

I have a 27.5 inch Mac.. I've had it for 7 years exactly now (give or take a few weeks). I LOVE my mac. I got it mainly for photoshopping my wedding photography. It too is started to run slow and we are getting ready to replace it. Probably with the exact same thing just newer lol. Best of luck in your search for a new computer.

Girl, you know I'm like a rabid dog protecting my computer. When Daniel had friends over for his birthday, they were on his laptop and his dad's laptop. One of the friends wanted to sit in my computer chair and also use my computer. Jay said, um, **I** don't even get to sit in her chair or use her computer. Bwahahahahaha

I would say, on average, every 3 or 4 years...sometimes 5. Most of the time it's only been because one breaks. DH and I both have gaming laptops now. He kids me all the time about buying a gaming machine for scrapbooking, and @gonewiththewind Cheryl, my son asks me every other day or so if he can game on my computer....UHHHH NOPE...hands off! I spent quite a bit more money than I did on the last one, so I'm hoping this one will last a bit longer.

You ladies with older children--kids old enough to game, which my 5yo doesn't know about yet lol--have got me thinking: I'm going to pretend that my computer is soooo sloooow and has like no RAM and can barely turn on cuz it's so bad. Then maybe they'll never try to use it cuz they won't think it's worth the hassle of turning on. Kind of like when they catch me with my mouth full and I say I'm eating granola when really it's chocolate.

I got my 27" iMac in 2013. It has been acting up on me a little but nothing major thankfully. I would like to get a couple more years out of it but I will replace it with a newer model when it quits. I am sold on the 27" after using it all these years and can't imagine not having it. I'm picky about my computer though. My kids aren't allowed on it. They have other stuff (iPads etc...) for gaming. I also pretty much just use my computer for scrapbooking. I run photoshop/lightroom CC on it. I have an external hard drive to store most of my stuff on.

My child learned way too young about computers and the magical things they hold! Argh. He was part of a statewide program for pre K that was computer based. I wish he still didn't know about the games available! Well, maybe except for ABCmouse.....

DS knows about apps on his Kindle cuz I subscribe to FreeTime*. Anyway, so he knows about stuff on there, which has kept him away from my laptop...until about a month ago when he realized the "triangle" on an ad for Bruder (heavy machinery and other "working vehicle" toys, for those of you without vehicle-obsessed children lol) meant "you can watch a video of this toy in action!" So now he thinks YouTube is the Bruder Spielwaren channel. And I'm not telling him differently (but he's thisclose to reading, and when that happens, I know I'm in trouble lol!).

*Kindle FreeTime: you can limit how much time they get for games, videos, and for reading plus you can add/remove programs/vids/books based on age ranges or your personal preferences. DS gets 15 min for apps and 30 for booktime, DD gets 30 min for apps and videos, which she can break up as she wishes and 3 hrs for books, and the Kindle shuts down the game/vid/book with a little "All done for the day!" message when they're time is up. No hassle. No watching the clock on my end. No argument. It's lovely! And no, I'm not associated with Amazon. This is really something I love about the Kindle Fire. That and its price compared to an iPad!

I adore Freetime @Tree City ! I should resubscribe to it. I forgot about the cut off feature. And I love his name for youtube! YouTube was amazing when munchkin couldn't read. Now, sigh. I wish YouTube had Freetime!

I'd say about every 5 years. I hate switching computers so I put it off until I have to.

HA! I just got a new laptop TODAY! My PC is 7 years old and has been acting up for two years now. Gets cleaned up and is fine and then a month or two later it is shutting down again:crazy3, so after a blue screen in the middle of an assignment..:badputer(ahem! ) I said enough! Landed a touch screen with stylus drawing capabilities that was on sale!!! :banana:clap:happyclap

I am a 'use it till it dies' kinda girl. Being a student I didn't have the money to replace my laptops just because they got a little slow. Now that I have a proper job and all, I bought myself an iMAC last summer and I know I will replace it when it starts to act up, not wait until it dies. But I hope it's gonna last me a lot more years to come!!

I definitely read in this thread that most laptops and Windows desktops are 'done' much earlier then most iMacs. I hope that's true because I totally used it to justify my purchase last summer! ;)

@KatrinaHunt13 You will be impressed with the speed the new memory adds til you get so used to it and then you'll be back to thinking it's slow. If you're like me i.e.

I once was on the phone with Apple for most of the weekend about a weird issue which I fortunately forget but in any case I said my iMac was getting slow. As he was signed into my computer and we did some check, he laughed and said...Hey, you're computer is smokin' hot! (embarrassed sigh)

I have done all the installs for memory upgrades except...the final shoving of the memory 'stick'? into the slot. My thumbs don't have the strength and I have to call my dh for that. :yesmaster
