it looks like i might be going to hawaii for my birthday. :happydance2

well, not actually FOR my birthday but it's awfully close to my birthday so why not call it my birthday? lol...

anyway. have you gone? i totally need 'tips' and 'must do's.

i won't be doing a volcano. or helicopter. we have already planned a luau. oh. and so visiting pearl harbor. i mean, being prior military and all patriotic and stuff, isn't it a must?

after all that - what do i have to do?

OH wow! That sounds like sooo much fun! I've never been but enjoy every second! When are you going?

I used to live on the north shore...I'm so jealous you're going! You definitely need to go the North Shore to watch the waves and the waterfall at Waimea Bay. Sunset Beach is beautiful at sunset time, of course...and there's a place called the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie that you need to go to, to see all the different poly cultures!! Haleiwa is a great little town on the North Shore also, they have yummy shaved ice there (like a glorified snow cone.) There's a swap meet at the football stadium on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and it's the perfect spot to stock up on souveniers for cheap! Let me know if you have any other questions too!

emily - i really want to do alot of snorkeling while i'm there. i'd also like to know what not to do. you know, where the regulars just shake their head at the 'tourist'...lol...

ive been twice-once as a teenager and hubby and i went for our 10 anniversary-the most fun we had was renting scooters and exploring!

Oh my word - YEAH! We went almost 10 years ago in January for our honeymoon! We stayed on the Big Island of Hawaii. We did the whale tour - they are in that area this time of year. It was the most AMAZING thing I have EVER seen. There were so many whale and they were so so close! Definitely would suggest doing that! Have fun -how exciting!

what island are you going to? my dad was a cop in honolulu for 2 years and my hubby and i were on kauai 2 summers ago for our 10 year anniversary. from what i've heard from people who have been to hawaii more than once. kauai is the best island. it's the most majestic and the most quaint! i will be back with more deets if you want them! :)

hahaha. well, then i am of no help. :luvya let me see if my dad has any pointers for stuff to do off the beaten path. you into that sort of thing? night life? what kind of things are you into?

wahooo OH FOR FUN!!!!!!!!

I recommend the bike rides! Okay its totally cheating BUT you take a VAN up to the top and just cruise the bike down the beautiful mountains! It was so much fun!!!!
Beaches! Local Shops and Cafes! Hawaiian Shaved ICE!!!!! Chocolate FARMS!!!!!!! Sun Bathing!!!!!!! Snorkeling!!!! Relaxing, sunsets, you know just general BLISS!!!!

Congrats hunny! Have fun!!!!

How fun! We went two years ago and loved every second. We spent 4 days at Waikiki then did a cruise around all the islands for 7 days. We really liked the Polynesian Cultural Centre, very touristy but still really nice and educational (that was also where we saw the best luau). The museum was also really good. If you like seafood I really recommend eating at Todai.

If you want to snorkel, I would recommend Hanauma Bay for sure...or if you want to go where the locals go, you can go to Shark's Cove. Both are great places!

If you don't want to be where the "tourists" are, I would stay away from Waikiki Beach...it's not all that great and it's way overcrowded. It's nice to try once though to say you've been there.

Oh...over on the North Shore is the Dole Pineapple Plantation, that's cool too. It's neat just to see all of those pineapple fields!

If you're into museums, there's the Bishops Museum. Good place to learn a bit about the Hawaiian culture!

I'll keep thinking!

We haven't been in forever - like 17 years - but we did hike up Diamond Head and it was totally worth it. And doable. I am NOT in the best of shape, so it's not just for the athletic ones! Gorgeous views!

and Hanauma Bay freaked the crap out of me. Too many tourists throwing fish food all over the place, and the fish swarm you. I thought they were going to bite my toes.

But we loved Pearl Harbor and Punchbowl Cemetery (more gorgeous views). Have a wonderful time!

the man now says we are going to oahu...honolulu. now i need to re-research everything...
