I'm so, so sad. I should have known better . . . my hard drive crashed. It happened before, I recovered everything and got a new one. I thought I had two years until it was "risky" to not be backing up monthly. It had a three year warranty. I figured every two years or so, I'd get a new one, back up the old one and be fine.

Don't be like me . . . back up monthly.

Two years worth of images . . . of my kids, grandkids, vacations, at this point every single macro image I've shot . . . EVERYTHING. Even my phone images and backups was on that hard drive. Every scrapbook page . . . every single scrapbook kit or digi-item I have is on that.

At last word, he said he may be able to grab "pieces" of data off it. No promises and he thought the chance of even that was at around 10% or less. I'm just so sad . . .

So let's talk recovery . . . I posted a lot on facebook, so I can at least grab the web sized images, I can pull the layouts for sentimental purposes off the gallery, look through emails for images I've sent to friends and family for printing, go back to Shutterfly and pull back off the album uploads? I know I can go back only a month on order history for supplies.

Who did you take too? i been trying to rebuild mine I lost that got corrupted. Any thing that was bad, isn't showing. I avoided for 3 years, so fustrated, went to play farmville 24/7. Back and now facing the bigest nightmare. I had felt confident, as i did save to a certain folder, unzipped, and placed in holding folder, then merged in my collection. I SHOULD go back to the 49 parts and start a fresh, then what I doing. Hubby cloned drive periodly, but i did know if was just the c partion, thought he done who drive, dumb of me. Hope you don't go hide for 3 years...

Oh noooo that is horrible!!! But I am no better! I file everything on an external hard drive but of course that can break just as much as a regular hard drive can. I used to post everything on Facebook but deleted most of my pics off of there as well as my scrap pages so I should really copy it to my hard drive as well. I hope they can recover a lot of your pics and pages!

Oh Lori! I feel for you as I have been there, hope you are able to find some of your images.

I would be puking my guts out! for reals, oh Lori, I am so sorry
I lost an ehd, and it is still on my bookshelf, for inside it are many things I didn't get off in time...but I know they are there darn it!

Oh no! I am so so sorry Lori! Like Anne I think I would be in hysterics. That is totally awful. I hope and pray they can get more off of it and are just giving you a worst case scenario.

Lori, I can help you out with your TLP supplies. I am so sorry for your awful crash. ((hugs))

It was my EHD . . . I keep EVERYTHING on it.

same here-

My computer is too full, I already deleted entire programs I don't use (like Garage Band & iMovie) and everything I download I move to folders into my EHDs (I have two)
BUT
Knowing EHDs crash- I had a dreadful experience and no nice store owners like Laura around- I started online back ups-

you should back up online
an average of $40 a year is great to sleep tight....you don't even feel it, doesn't slow the computer and you are granted nothing will be lost...well spend money-

aww. laura that is so sweet.

glad you can get your TLP stuff back, but i'm with the others ... i would be puking right now too. so sorry Lori. i just want to mention this happened to me with one of EHDs and my husband read some techy stuff online. ended up ordering a USB to SATA adapter/connector bc it was the crudy connectors that come with the EHD that were faulty, not the drive itself. All my data was still there ... might not have anything to do with your situation, but perhaps worth looking into?

What a heartbreak, Lori, I am so sorry. I admit to being vulnerable too, but always thinking yeah I'll get to it….

I have been there too. I know the pain, the frustration, the guilt, ..
Lost months of my youngest son his babytime... Still feel awful and sad about it.
You'll get to accept it, but you'll never forget... I wish you all the strength!

Here is my plan going forward. I now have two EHD's. Each month, I will copy over all my new images (easy since I label folders by date shot) as well as my scrapbook supply folder. So I will always have two full EHD's with near complete info. When one goes, I will replace and fully load it from my backup EHD. I had looked into online services but I have soooooo many images that this isn't affordable.

They are still trying to recover anything they can from it. But he isn't optimistic at all . . . I almost wonder if he is just too afraid to tell me its over!

Lori, I use Synctoy which is free from Microsoft to backup to my extra EHDs. It'll go in a copy any new files and will also copy over any files you've changed too. It's super easy and makes me feel more confident that I didn't miss anything. Plus with one button click I don't put it off and then forget to backup. I do it every Friday.

I am in the same boat. I had just transferred every single file over to my external. 2 weeks later it died. I hadn't had time to back everything up. 6 years worth of pictures & scrapbooking stuff. The pictures of the births of my children. EVERYTHING! I'm hoping to recover some data when I get my tax return. Thank goodness Laura & some of the other sites helped me get some scrapbooking stuff back. If not, I probably wouldn't be in MOC. I keep telling myself they're just pictures. It's not like something really happened to my kids. I feel for you. Good luck with everything.

Look again. CrashPlan backs up everything - NO LIMIT - starting at $4/mo. Or you can use it for free to back up between two EHDs automatically. No having to remember anything.

Having my last laptop lose two hard drives, I have learned to back up continuously with Backblaze. It's not that expensive and it is great insurance. I also have two EHD's that I back up to periodically. But they are mainly for my ACDSee tags and fonts.
