file types, filenames etc

I just unzip things form byoc, and oh its different then years ago. old days was on al, pp el jc wa and template. What i do with cut files, etc. some things you cant re zip for chacaters in filenames.

why are art bits not elements, I on windows, and i guess mac don't have limits on chacters or filename root dept

Hi Cath.. some things are so subjective when naming, and designers all choose to do things differently, for better or worse. So long as you know how you use and organize your stash, the names don't matter. You can certainly move all the "art bits" into an "element" folder for that kit if you like.

As far as cut files go, if you don't own a cutting machine like a silhouette or cricket, you can either trash the cut files if they're provided in that specific file type (usually SVG), or use them as digital "cut files" if provided as PNGs where you clip papers to them and use them as part of your LO. Let me see if I can find some samples in the gallery.. BRB..

Yes all of this. Designers try to stay within the "norm" ...you see most are still pp, wa, ap
but with designers creating so many new styles of things, or mutliple packs, they try to name them to differniate.

Art bits, would still be elements in my folders. The only things I separate are alphas and cards.

Cut files, I tend to delete. Unless there's a png file and I can use it like the leaves on this page I created.

I just open the download and save the file as the designer indicates. Usually the artsy bits are elements for NBK Designs. I leave everything under the designer and kit.. I do not split out papers int a paper folder .. I have my files set up on my EHD by TLP>Designer>File.. if I am looking for a staple I do a search in windows of that folder.

I have no problem with the files as is.
As a windows user like you,I store the files as kits by designer, but even if you split them for whatever reason , then the windows search engine have no problem finding the items afterwards. The Designers here label every item, so just do a normal search if you need something and don’t find it. (Ex even if paint is in an element folder, if you search paint, it will still show up)
Once you Start relabeling stuff, you are asking for trouble....

i not rebebeling at alll. just ovverwelmed.

i have 1634 individual zips to unzip from 4 years of purchases tat i need to work with. I dont want to trash or leave in zip for they not backed up. Like a system i start now, then after done, have to go back and redo. Maybe i can find another drive and make it hyprid and put cut, printables on.

I hope you find a system that works for you. Slow and steady wins the race, you can do this.

After DSD, or iNSD when I have a lot of zipped files I'm working with, this is what I do:
1) I unzip one designer at a time. That may be one file, that may be 10 files; it may be 1 kit, it may be multiple kits.

2) I check the folders that unzipped against the zipped files. Then, I delete it. I know you don't want to delete, but maybe you could move the zips to a different folder so you know you did that kit?

3) Next, I open up the file folder that I am going to put all the kit pieces into. Usually, I move papers and alphas into the elements folder. I also open up my downloads folder so I have two folders open on my screen. I drag the items from the folder I'm deleting to the one I'm keeping. I do relabel that folder by adding kit or collection or bundle to the end. But I don't relabel individual files.

4) Once I finish that designer, I move to the next one. It takes longer than unzipping everything at once, but, it also keeps me from being overwhelmed.

I actually start my sorting when I download. I don't download to the downloads folder. I download directly to the designer folder, creating a folder for the kit to save each zip in. I unzip right in the kit folder and once I have all zip files unzipped I move them to an EHD where I store all my zip files (and yes I have needed them at times). After unzipping I do move everything except alphas into the main kit folder and move the alpha into a sub-folder then delete all the empty folders from the unzipping process. I also copy the preview and put it in the designer folder then rename the preview as "folder" so that it shows in windows explorer. This also helps if I look in explorer and see a folder with no image, I know there is something in there to be unzipped.

For some designers I do edit the name of the preview so that it sorts alphabetically to match the kit folder.

To keep track of my zip files I keep a spreadsheet of any purchases and note on it when the files have been unzipped and copied to my EHD backup. I never started using the downloads folder when it showed up in windows. I just hate not having stuff organized!

In all my years of scrapping I've never kept the zip files once I've unzipped them....maybe I'm missing something

I never started using the downloads folder

i have 2 pysical drives in laptop, i download to h partion, and unzip to g, so both are on different physical drives. I usually have 2 windows open, I create the kit folder, then open the zip and drag files into the new folder, where i can skip the few extra things mac includes, or tou that i know i have.

I don't keep them.
I understand why some choose to, but having had zips corrupt, it's not worth the space to me.

Only zips I have had corrupt were during downloading. In all the zips I've unzipped a 2nd time, I've never had a problem.

For my peace of mind, keeping zips is a must. And, yes, I even organize my zip files. LOL

my old photoshop suite used these formats, now they don''t show a photoshop icon

so i can get rid of ai , eps , vector
anything else?

AI is Adobe Illustrator which is another program made by the same people who make photoshop. You can also open EPS files in that one. I personally do not keep them.

I keep all my zips for scrap stuff too and I organize them inside the main folders.

I do not "relabel" but I do ALWAYS open all my zips immediately or within a day or so. I move the zip into the original folder. I tried storing them elsewhere but I found that didn't work for me. It can be hard to figure out which goes with what. So I unzip everything. Then I take the elements folder (I usually buy kits or bundles, very rarely just one piece)... I move any other items that go with it (cards, papers, etc) into the elements folder. This is where I rename. I change the element folder name to the designer name + name of kit/bundle/etc.

As an example, Designed by Soco has Memories that was a recent release. You buy the Memories Papers, Memories Cards and in this case Memories Words (which replaces the elements). I unzip, load the cards folder in the words folder, along with all 3 zips. I usually will move all papers into the main folder too, in this case the words folder. I can then see the bulk of it in one folder. When I get it organized how I like it. I rename the Words folder which is now my main folder to Soco Memories. Sometimes I'd use the name Soco Memories Bundle or if I didn't buy all the items maybe Soco Memories Words+Papers.

I use bridge to search and I have a mac so I also use tagging and I change the folder previews to the kit preview. So when I need something about Memories... This folder would come up easily.

I hope that all makes sense and is helpful. Oh, I also store everything on my external hard drives. I have one scrapbooking folder that is organized how I like it but then I back up the entire thing on a second drive.

Here's an example of how they look once adjusted and organized. I keep the names as close to the file name as possible.

Here's my external drives all connected at once... I rename the drives to keep less confusion. Then one of them (the 5TB drive) is a passport so I can disconnect it and take it along with me and it stores the things I use the most.

Everyone does things a bit differently and I saw you mentioned a Windows PC which is a bit different. I just found having the actual kit name or product name as the main folder name and storing everything together is easier. I will say BYOC is harder. I have bits of BYOC stuff everywhere and haven't figured out the best way to store it. I do try to keep the BYOC label and month and year but also product name. They get very long which can mess up a mac system when moving or deleting.
