Since my DD is a single mom and baby-daddy doesn't pay his fair share of child support, she receives some assistance from WIC. I'm not sure if you all have that in your state, but it is basically a program that gives families milk, cereal, eggs and cheese so they ensure kids are getting those things.

Anyway, DD had an appointment with the WIC people the other day, and they basically told her that Kennedy is fat. At 2. And that she needs to "restrict his diet" and have it as a goal to keep him from gaining any more weight between now and July.

Seriously?

The kid is 34 pounds and 36 inches tall. He doesn't have an extra ounce of fat on him (except maybe his cheeks). He is totally muscle. He is strong enough that if I put my hands out, he can lift himself from the floor using just his arm/back muscles. He runs around all day, every day, and he has so much energy the people at the Little Gym are worn out by him.

Kennedy doesn't get any fast food. We don't give him cookies or sweets unless you count blueberries and bananas. He doesn't drink pop and has limited juice, so it isn't like he's gorging on anything that is bad for him.

She was totally upset and feels like she is a bad mom. She also feels like they are telling her that because she is overweight and they must think that she's going to make him overweight.

The pediatrician has never had a concern about his weight, so I told her to go by what he says and to stop feeling bad. I know that they just have their charts to go by and can't individualize their spiel, but it scares me to think that some parents might really take it to an extreme.

This is the new "fat"

At a week from three Bella is about those measurements and he looks much skinner than her - and she's pretty small compared to the kids her age in her class at Parents Day Out. WIC doctors are stupid. They failed to notice when Bella was an infant that she was Failure To Thrive, even though she'd only put on 2 pounds in 4 months.

I agree with Trish that WIC doctors can be weird. I used to get it, and I was told by then that my son was overweight once when he was in the 10th percentile for weight at his pediatrician visit. LOL. I think they don't know how to read their charts always. Seriously, there is no wayyyy that Kennedy is overweight - look at him! I would definitely ignore comments like that if his pediatrician thinks he is doing fine and if common sense says he is fine.

Oh NO! I am SO sorry to hear that. What a horrible, horrible thing for her to have to hear. My pediatrician told me the same thing more or less when my daughter was at her 2-year check up. He said she was way too fat for her age and height. He said a lot. and I went home fuming. and crying. How can a 2-year old be diagnosed as fat anyway? at 2, my babe still had all her baby fat, yes. shortly after that appointment, she shot up and leaned out quite a bit. but the damage was done. We've spent the past four years constantly watching her to make sure she isn't over -eating. *sigh* I hate the ped for that.

and what's better? two years later, when her brother went in for his 2-year check up? the doctor pretty much accused me of starving him. said he was underweight and i'd better start giving him butter to fatten him up.

I mean, COME ON.

And so, I'm sorry to hear that about your daughter. Make sure she does listen to her ped and not that other person. her son looks anything BUT fat. he looks healthy, and skinny. Oooh. I'm just mad now!

yep... .ignore the wic folk. I used wic for formula when ce was a noob and even my pediatrician told me to ignore whatever they said. they're wacky :p trust your pedi and don't worry.

I love wic for the fact that they help when you don't have much money. My first two dd would have literally starved if it hadn't been for wic. However we were always getting wacky responses from them. Alot of times they mixed their height and weight on the chart which made them "obese". Yet when they got the numbers right my kids were underweight and really tall. I'm guessing something like that happened to your grandson. Tell DD to ignore wic and follow what the peditrician says.

So sorry for your DD. Like we moms don't have enough to feel guilty about! There is no way that little guy is overweight! I hope she listens to the regular Dr. and not this wacko.

Amy

What?!?!?! No way he's fat!! if it was me I would not worry about it. He's a cutie by the way! ;)

Really?!?!?!? Fat?!?!?!? My son's kids (they live with their mama) have been told that they are too fat, as well. None of them are fat and I think they could use a little more weight. I do think DHS (same as WIC) have some crazy ideas as to what FAT is!

oh that is so sad and not right for the WIC people to say anything... and look at the kiddo, can totally tell he is not fat!! *hugs* to your DD, she is a great mom!

I'm so sorry she's had to deal with that :( As moms we have so much to worry about - she certainly didn't need to hear that! I think he looks perfectly healthy.

That really makes me angry!!!

I had a doctor tell me that one of my boys was overweight at his 2 month check up. We had just moved, so it was a new doc for me. I only breastfed, and he got 5 min on each side every 4-5 hours. She could see my other two boys too who were very tall and just the right weight...they had been that big at that age too. I was fuming!!!

Nah. Really?? I hope your daughter gives no more thought to this, because it's totally not true. It sucks that they would say that to her!

Totally agree with everyone else here. It makes me mad that they say things like this to moms, and it's often to young moms, that make them feel even more insecure than they already are at parenting. Tell you DD she is a great mom and to trust her own instincts more than what any dr. says!

that's totally crazy! i would be devastated too :(
it must be hard being all alone and doing the right thing and then get smashed in face like that.
it's good you're there for her kimberlee <3

in Norway if the father doesn't pay child support, you get the money from the government and they send the bill to the father. i thought it was like that in the states too :/

Thanks ladies! I told her what everyone said, and it made her feel better. She has been frustrated because my nephew eats junk food all of the time (he is 3.5) and drinks pop and has fast food constantly. Yet he is so skinny it doesn't look healthy (mostly because he doesn't always eat because he's picky). She always thinks it is ironic that Lucian has a horrid diet and is skin and bones.

We were kind of half-joking about it today because poor Kennedy ended up with a stomach virus early this morning and has been vomiting all day. The smart a$$ in her wants to call and tell WIC that he's going to make weight. :p

Wow. That is so strange!

I do know that pediatricians are really cracking down on that weight chart, but obviously your 2 year old is not fat!
