Eye Doc

When’s the last time you went to the eye doc? I can't remember ... it's so long ago ... My ophthalmologist has retired in the meantime, and I should look for a new doctor.

Do you wear contacts or glasses? I wear glasses ... When I need new glasses, I go to the optician and have my eyes measured there ...

I went to the eye doctor about a year ago. I don't have an appointment for this year yet. I usually wait until I feel like I need new glasses. Lol.

I started wearing glasses at 3 years old. Then I switched to contacts in 8th grade. I had LASIK done in early 2008 and that was amazing to not have to wear anything and be able to see. Now I'm old and I need glasses again. Sigh. I tried contacts, but I just couldn't stand them on my eyes anymore. So I have to wear glasses. I have them all over the house. Reader for tiny bead work, computer glasses and my regular glasses. It's SOOOO annoying!

When’s the last time you went to the eye doc ? The last time was last July and I have a new appointment for July.

Do you wear contacts or glasses ?
I wear varifocals and I realise every day that my near vision is changing. Unfortunately, I had my lenses replaced last year, so I have to wait another year before changing them again (to get a refund from my private health insurance; otherwise I’d have to pay the full price, and that’s especially true for varifocal lenses with photochromic lenses).
This year, I’m going back because I’d like to try contact lenses when I do sport. Glasses really aren’t practical. They’re okay for strength training, but for karate they’re not great. I’m always worried about breaking them.
I made an appointment for my son to get contacts because he always breaks his glasses playing outside. I hope the contacts work well for you.

That definitely sounds annoying! I’m afraid my daughter will eventually have to use glasses all the time because her contacts have started bugging her every year. We did get some new drops to try year round so hopefully those do the trick!

I go every year, I’ve had glasses since I was 8 years old. I started wearing contacts when I was 15 and that’s what I usually wear, except for late at night and early morning when my contacts aren’t in. Thankfully my contacts don’t bother me at all! My vision is terrible, -10 in one eye and -9 in the other.

I go every year as well. We've had the same optometrist since we moved here (20 years ago), and he is so good at his job. I use glasses and can't see very far without them. I have prescription computer glasses (designed with blue light reduction and optimized for screen distance) but I usually forget to wear them. I also have prescription sunglasses that I wear whenever it is bright out (almost every day here!). I even wear glasses in the pool because my vision is so bad. The only time I take them off is to look at something very close up or when I go to sleep.

Good job going every year. I’m glad your contacts don’t bother you so you can wear them all the time. Hopefully we get to that point with my daughter because she doesn’t like wearing glasses.

You’re lucky to have the same doctor for 20 years! I really like ours so hopefully he sticks around that long.

I had my annual exam in November. I'm very nearsighted and have worn glasses or contacts since I was 5 or 6. I did a thing starting when I was in second grade where I wore hard contacts which were supposed to reshape my eyes and improve my vision as I grew. I don't know if it helped much and I ended up with corneal abrasions several times. I gave up on them by the time I was in high school, then got rigid gas permeable contacts when I was starting college (much easier on the eyes). I pretty much stopped wearing those too by the time I was about 30, just too much hassle.

These days I wear glasses with progressive lenses for most things, and I have a single vision pair for computer. I skipped getting new computer glasses the last couple of years, but something has drastically changed in my vision in the last couple of months. I had to boost the text size to be able to read anything, and I still struggle at times. I haven't decided whether to go ahead and go in to have my prescription checked soon or just fumble through until I'm due again in November.

I go every six months to get my eyes tested. I was diagnosed with glaucoma 5 yrs ago but a new clinic I started going to performed an OCT test which showed a different kind of damage than what glaucoma does so they think I had an ocular hypertensive event and I might not even have glaucoma. It's scary when you go to specialists and you assume they know what they are doing. Further tests and a trial off drops will help determine if that is true. Fingers crossed. It would be nice to not have to worry about any further eye damage and not use the drops anymore.

Years ago I wore contacts but I have dry eyes so do better with glasses now.

When’s the last time you went to the eye doc? Last May so it's coming up on my annual appointment but we've since moved so I'd better get on with the task of finding a new eye dr. again!

Do you wear contacts or glasses? I wear both and I'm sad every time I have to put them on. I had Lasik in 2013 and for about 10 glorious years I was correct lenses free but now my last doctor said I was "part of the birthday club" and have to wear them again. Pffftttt..... I could have the enhancement surgery done but every doctor I see (which is a lot b/c we move often) says it's not worth the risk and I'd have to get myself back to Kansas City to the original doctor anyway so it is what it is!

When’s the last time you went to the eye doc? Last July, at which point I purchased a new pair of glasses

Do you wear contacts or glasses? I wear glasses every day, and contacts every once in a while, and just for special occasions

I do the same debate with my kids and the eye doc when they need to go in before their annual visit. Why can’t things just stay good for a full year?!

I hope you get conclusive results Rae.

My daughter is the opposite and wears contacts every day and glasses every once in a while. ;)

Ummmmm.....I'm well overdue. It's definitely been more than 5 years, I might even say 7 now. Reason being, every time I go in, I end up spending $$$ on new glasses....we're talking $400-600 & they always seem to muck up my testing (I've gone from being nearsighted for like 23 years to farsighted for one test/pair of glasses and back to nearsighted the next. Didn't think much of it at the time but then after the next test thought this is all a bit strange. The worst one was when I was shopping around for glasses I liked & of course each optometry practice wanted to redo the testing for free and I got three or four wildly different prescriptions within about a 2 week period. After that I always made sure either my mum or grandmother were with me in case they pulled that stunt again. For the last couple of times I've stuck to a practice that only has two branches but they aren't local....they're better but not great. I'm thinking I might actually next time try and get an appointment at the local optometry school instead and also see if it's cheaper to just replace the lenses in one of the two or three pairs of old glasses I have - the frames are still fine
Do you wear contacts or glasses?
Glasses since about 2 years old, though I'm lazy at home and don't wear them as often as I should (all the time)

Yep... this was me too. LASIK and then about 10 years of glorious no glasses or contacts. I'm back in glasses again now too. Such a bummer.

I’ve worn glasses since fourth grade (about 70 years ago)and I still remember my diagnosis: 15/40 compared to 20/20. I’m not even sure they measure vision that way anymore. Like many of you, I switched to contact lenses in my teens and wore them for about ten years, but eventually decided they were more trouble than they were worth and went back to glasses.

About five years ago, I had cataract surgery, and now I rarely need glasses unless the print is very small or the lighting is poor. It’s been incredibly freeing. I haven’t been back to the eye doctor since then, though…probably time to schedule a visit!
