Hello everyone !

We’re in the midst of another spell of extremely hot weather in France – so much so that M’s school has advised us to keep the children at home on Monday and Tuesday. He was due to hand in his books on Wednesday, but they’ve been asked to bring them in today. I have a feeling this lad will be on his summer holidays by this evening...
A has finished his written A-level exams, and there’s talk of postponing the oral exam for those due to sit it in the afternoon. A isn’t affected; he’s due to sit his on Monday morning. You can send him all your good vibes, by the way.

Who’s still got lessons, and until when?
What do schools do in the event of a heatwave? Here, the premises aren’t at all suitable – they’re proper heat traps: sweltering in summer and freezing in winter.

Heat in schools is unpleasant here in the UK too. All our buildings are created to capture and hold onto heat for economy during our long cold months. Schools generally stay open during the hotter months. My daughter had her A levela early in the exam period and finished in May. I think this week is the last week for the majority of A levels (18 year olds) here and GCSEs (16 year olds) normally run through to the end of June or beginning of July.
I don't have any youngsters left in school. The schools normally break up for summer the end of the 3rd week in July.

I live in the desert where regularly gets 110F/43C. I remember picking my son up from Kindergarten during the first week of school one year and my car thermometer hit 118. So our schools definitely all have AC. In the primary grades, they do still go out for recess in the heat. They also tend to end in mid-May. We do head back to school in early August though, when it’s still really hot!

Our schools are all air conditioned now, but I do remember the days when they weren't. It was miserable and we did get out early from time to time because of the heat.
No kiddos left in school and I've been out of school for 3 weeks now, but we go back in early August. I wish our calendar was back to the way it used to be - Sept to June - so that we're out during the hottest months, but they adjusted it so that we can end the semester at winter break.
Sending lots of good vibes for those exams coming up!!

Most of the schools around us were built without air conditioning many decades ago, but now, most of them have added at least window units so they are sweltering at the end or beginning of each school year. Here in Michigan we are more likely to have school canceled due to a extreme cold these days.

Good luck to your kids still taking exams! Bring on summer vacation!

My boys are both in college and were done at the end of April this year. The older one graduated, but the youngest will go back at the end of August again.

My oldest finished her college semester last month and my youngest just had her last day of school on Wednesday. (both in building with A/C) Woo hoo for summer vacay!

My kids got out of school end of May and go back to school mid-August.

We've never had extreme heat that prevented going to school or going out to play.
We have had rare snow days when they tell everyone to stay home to keep the roads safer if a lot of snow falls during the night.

My grandson's school is mid August to mid May. It is miserable hot on the gulf coast, so summer camp is indoors except on water days.

In Oregon, kids in K-12 go to school beginning the day after Labor Day in September until the second week of June. So, we just finished up for the summer. A lot of our schools are being rebuilt, so hot days are not an issue if they happen, which isn't too often while school is in session. But oh boy...if it snows an inch, we'll get ice and then school's out because no one can drive in it! LOL That also does not happen very often! I'm curious what is considered a heat wave in Europe.

My school district was done May 29. I don't recall a school closure due to heat, but at a certain temperature (I forget exactly what) the students aren't allowed to go out to recess and that happens a few times during May, August, and September. The schools here in Virginia have air conditioning.

I don't know how my generation survived in my San Diego schools growing up without air conditioning. :lol2

Here are the forecast temperatures for next week; it’s warmer than it was at the end of May.

It's winter here so I can't relate to your temperatures at present but it does get really hot here in Summer. Our homes are built for the heat but not so much the schools. When my kids were little they were just starting to put air-conditioning into the classrooms and they used to get so hot and bothered that they couldn't concentrate. When it gets up near 40 they used to close the school for the day. When my eldest was in High school they had a new school block architecturally designed to funnel breezes into the class rooms and had other "cooling" designs added but sadly none of which did a great job and they ended up having to air-condition them all anyway.
