Does the fact that you have not done something before increase or decrease its appeal to you?

For me, it depends on what it is. I'm adventurous but not just for the sake of being adventurous. I want to have new experiences, but not just any. Only particular ones I choose. If it's something I don't want to do, not having done it before makes it even less appealing.

Wow Dawn! So fast I hadn't gotten my answer posted yet. :lol2

I'd say less likely.
I am not one to rush to try new things. I know what I like and will stick with that.

I *want* to do new things, but I want to be led through it or experience it with someone else...especially if it's sort of a public thing one does. Like, taking a taxi for the first time with someone from NYC. Now, I know I could do that if I needed to. I want to have at least some sort of framework before trying something new on my own.

I'd say it makes it more appealing. I like a challenge, I'm not afraid to fail at something and even though I may never wish to experience something more than once, the once was worth a try.

I am not adventurous by myself. I used plan for my kids crazy things. I actually could eat same food everyday, and do same things all the time.
I jump out of my routine for my husband. Lol

Like @scrapchyck for some new adventures, I want someone to lead the way. I have flown before but it has been 13 years. The last time I flew, you still had paper tickets and there was no TSA (it started in Dec 2013 and my last flight was Sept 2013). So I'm thankful that I am going on a tour in June where I'll be with tour leaders that are experienced in flying. I told the gal a couple weeks ago that I was glad she'd be there to help me get through it. And, it is a flight to another country (Canada) which is something I have never done. I've been to Canada but it was by car in my younger years and by bus in 2025.

I was apprehensive about my first bus trip but a good friend from college went with me. I'm an introvert around new to me people. Thankfully Sue isn't so she paved the way for me to be more extroverted and meet people on that trip. I did know the tour leader for our bus though since she was a high school classmate. But I saw how the other people treated solo travelers and it made me feel like I could do a bus trip solo. So I did... 2 of them in 2025. Although my high school friend was the tour leader on my bus for one trip so I sort of had someone to hang out with. The other trip the tour leader is the agent that books all these trips and I've gotten to know her. Got on that bus and there were people from the first trip that I ended up hanging out with. My college friend and I went on a bus trip (the one to Canada) and I saw familiar faces on that trip as well.

So this year I'm doing 3 trips on my own. I've seen the names of the other people for the 2 that have flights and I know 2 people on the Canada trip and 1 gal on the Utah trip along with the agent and her husband. The 3rd trip is another bus trip and several people from the Vermont trip last year said they planned on going on it. But if there isn't anybody, I will at least know the agent and her husband.

That's the extent of me trying new things.

It very much depends on what it is. I’ve never been skydiving but it’s definitely appealing to me. I’ve been on big rollercoasters and they’re still appealing to me. I’ve never been to another country and I don’t really care if I ever do; it’s slightly appealing to me though.

I'm always up for trying new things, so I'd say 99.9% of the time it would be more appealing to me. I'm trying to think of something that would be less appealing...maybe eating something weird lol

It really depends on what it is and who else is involved. I might need someone to be brave with me, or that has done it before. Some things, I don't mind going it alone. I've never done bungee jumping and not likely to either, no matter who is involved, unless it happens to be in a space that provides a very safe landing in the event the bungee doesn't do it's job properly :giggle

That's a good point! For some things, I'm more likely to do them if someone else is doing it and maybe even instructing me.

I think people with that attitude do more things and find more happiness.

Oh yeah, I got out of my comfort zone for my kids. My oldest is a big extrovert. I started an entire homeschool group and enrolled them in drama club, for which I volunteered, because I knew they needed it.

You're living my dream. I hope to travel a lot in the future, and I will definitely be leaning on leaders and more experienced travelers, but I want to see more of the world so I will push myself.

Yes, I realized after I posted the question and set to answer it that it's not one or the other for me. We differ on the things that attract us though. I DO want to visit more other countries but have known all my life I do not want to skydive.

I'm with you. I'm not sure if there's much that is less appealing to me just because I haven't done it before. The difference for me is that I'm likely to be anxious about the unfamiliar thing until I've done and find out for myself what it's like.

Yep, bungee jumping is another one I'm definitely not interested in. Anything with a high safety risk is unappealing to me, even if I've done it before. I jumped off a cliff into the ocean when I was 19 years old, but the older I get, the less appealing that idea has become!

One of my bucket list items is to visit all 50 states so I've been focusing on that, have half of them and will add 3 more this year. Another bucket list was seeing the Canadian Rockies by train and that is happening in June!

People knock doing tours and just planning everything themselves. I'm all about having someone else that knows what they are doing, do all the work. If there is a problem, the tour leader calls the tour company and they handle any issues. The bus driver and tour leaders just make sure we get where we are supposed to be and on time. Best part is not having to do the driving especially at night.
