Do you use the Day One journaling program?

Who uses the Day One journaling program? I think I might have learned about it from somewhere here last December. Anyway, I've used the iOS version of Day One since last December, and like it. I had been intending to get the Mac version after I become consistent at using the iOS version, but I just discovered today that it's so much more expensive!

I'm trying to find information comparing the two versions to see if there's a benefit or additional features in the Mac version that would make it worth so much more. I read this article and asked them at Twitter, and the guy said he thinks it's just because the market supports it. But I'm not convinced. I knew from the start I'd enjoy being able to type with all my fingers but I'm not sure if I want to pay $40 that. I prefer typing on a keyboard, but I can type well enough on my phone. With PDF export, I could be content just just to use the phone app.

Can you tell me, if you love the desktop version of Day One, what it is about it that you like? Which version do you use more?

Thanks!

Edited to add: I'm finding this article about the Day One version 2 update earlier this year interesting too. He says there is pretty much no difference between the desktop and phone versions. So I just have to decide how much I want to be able to sometimes type entries on my Mac. I'm still interested in hearing what you have to say though!

I've heard awesome things about this as an app, but it's not for android. *sigh*
so, I do not use it. I'm sorry...

I wasn't sure about that. Too bad! And that's something to consider for me. What if in 10 years I want to switch to android? Well, I won't lose anything because I intend to regularly export the entries as PDF and possibly even print them in books once a year (I think Blurb lets us do that with PDFs).

I hope android users have an awesome journaling app too.

I have the Desktop version of Day1 but got it when it was brand new and I KNOW I didn't pay $40. or at least I cannot imagine that I did. I usually balk at any app that is over $1.99 :cornfused Seriously. I used it consistently for quite a few years but I think it was when I had my knee replaced that I stopped.

What I love about it - as I'm pushing myself to get back to using it - is that I have the timer set to give me reminders a couple of times a day. There is always something I can note and it's a big help if for PL especially if I get behind. I don't have it on my phone but I may get it so that when traveling I can note things in addition to photographing stuff. But the phone app IS $4.99! eek!

Android user here too.

What appeals to you about Day 1? I ask because if it's just a journal, or something, I have something else I use. I moved to maildiary when ohlife closed.
It's not pretty, but I can type an entry, or email myself. I can include photos. And I can glance at random entries which is fun. The best part is it will allow me to export my entries.

I got it as a free app of the week, and I did use it for a while. What I didn't like is that it uses DropBox for your entries, which tends to fill up fast! There was a problem with it not working not long after I got it, and I can't remember if it ever was resolved. I stopped using it due to the storage issue. Other than that, it was nice. But I'd not pay $40 for it. I'm too cheap.

It has only been $40 since the new Day One 2 version came out earlier this year. I like the reminder function too. I had no problem upgrading the Day One 2 phone app at $5. And actually, that's a sale price because they just had another revision; it's going back up to $10 soon. I think there are so many unique functions of Day One the $5 price is a steal, and even $10 isn't bad. I'm just wondering if I want to pay more to have it on my computer when I'm doing well enough with it on my phone.

Day One functions very smoothly and easily, automatically recording date, time, weather, steps, etc, and allows photos to be included. Big thing for me, too, is the PDF export function. It has a lot of unique features that set it apart from just using a word processor. A couple of years ago I used TextEdit and that was good enough, but did nothing but text and was entirely manual. I've considered using Lightroom book module, Evernote, and other possibilities but Day One has been the most useful, practical method of journaling I've found.

They no longer work with Dropbox. They have their own cloud now. Some reviewers complained about that, saying it's not private enough. I don't write anything in my journals that I wouldn't want people to see and doubt anyone cares to read our journals anyway.

I'm thinking I will just use the phone app for a while longer. I can always get the desktop version later if I find myself desperately wanting to type on a keyboard. Maybe I'll even find it on sale someday. I wish there was a way to flag products in the App Store and be notified of sales.

all those features you mentioned Michele remind me of the "Journey" app for Android. I found that looking for a replacement for an iOS app "Collect". But I have noticed on the few entries I've done, the weather and time and whatnot. I haven't made it a priority to use it daily, but I do on occasion go in there. I have to go back to find out if it stores to my phone, or cloud, or what the back up/export options were. I was thinking I'd use it as a possible place for Project Life notes... but haven't made that stick.

Yeah, I wrote them off because they used to say they were doing an Android version, then decided not too after waiting forever! I love the weather thing! I may have to check out journey.

I loved Ohlife on my computer and was sad when they closed! I haven't really found another one that I like as much. So I'm not journaling as much as I should. :(

Sorry! I'm an Android user, too.

I just started using Journey (which is free) a month ago or so. It seems to do all the same things that Day One does. It dings every night at 9 pm to ask if I want to write something for the day.

I'm just testing it out now and will give it a trial run when I do my December Daily this year. If it works as well as I hope, I will use it for my PL next year. Great minds think alike, Kristina!

Nope. It is basically a diary. You can write daily notes in it.

mmm not sure I would spend $40 on something like that.... I do hand written diary because I draw a lot and is a different thing to the scrapping... but I suppose for the younger generations is good...
