    Journaling reads:

The lesson was on faith - how to hold on to it when you know for a fact no one is listening. The altar was cold and empty; I had every reason to believe it would stay that way, for at least a year. Maybe even forever. It turned out that faith was easiest when life was hardest, and that was the least surprising lesson of all.

    Text reads:

The first question is the obvious one: How many?

She looks at her hands, smiling as she holds up her fingers to wiggle them.

"Twenty-one. Not quite one for every year but close. It's hard to find them small enough to knuckle them up on my pinkies."

There are as many questions as rings on her fingers but again, go with the obvious.

    "Why so many?"

That chases the smile away. She looks at her hands like she'll find an answer there. "I took off a ring I'd been wearing for half my life. I knew I needed to replace it with something else, but I couldn't decide what." She shrugs as her smile comes back. "A few years ago, I wrote a poem about how to keep loving yourself after catastrophic change; one of the lines is decorate your dry, bruised hands. So I thought, okay. Maybe that will work. And since I'm a firm believer in too much is never enough ..."

Another shrug. I wait for her to say something else. She waits for another question.

    "Which is your favorite?"

This time she laughs as she holds up the middle finger on her right hand. "This baby. I've been obsessed with bees ever since he left, since I took back the nickname he had for me. The ring reminds me that it's all mine now; I don't need him to call me Bee. I can call myself that. The crown just punctuates it. Makes it more obvious when I raise up my middle finger in frustration."

A thoughtful look comes around and she holds up her pinky on the same hand. It's adorned with a small silver band, capped off with two thin black rings. Hope is written on it, the letters stamped black into the worn silver.

"But sometimes I think this one is most important. This is the one that gets me through."

    Day 17 - Hindsight is 20/20

    Journaling (word count 251):

Hindsight is 20/20 for some, but I’ve had poor eyesight most of my life. More like 20/200 with a healthy side order of astigmatism.

But then again, maybe in this I’m willfully blind.

The thing about hindsight is you have to make a conscious choice to see what you maybe purposely tried to avoid looking at too closely. If I look back, I’m liable to find the answers I’m not ready for, to the questions that make me shake like a pair of glasses clutched in a trembling hand.

Can a list of good deeds really make up for an equally long list of bad?

Where is the line between merely toxic and outright abusive?

Did we cross it when I was too busy finding somewhere else to look?

And the kicker - did I really stay because I thought it was the best choice or because I was too scared to be on my own after so many years?

I don’t want to look back, examine the past to find out if I did, in fact, spend more than half my life in an abusive relationship. I know I’m going to have to at some point, either to heal from it or just find some peace of mind but believe me when I say I don’t want to, for more reasons than just the obvious.

So I’ll simply adjust my glasses and tell myself right now foresight is a little bit more important.

And maybe start looking for a therapist.
