LOL

I was recently force elected as the president of my running club. Which is funny as I a) didn't want to be president of my running club, and in fact tried to step down from the board entirely the month before and b) am a mediocre runner at best.

But anyway, I've apparently inherited a mess. I realized we don't even have official by-laws, which is kinda... mandatory.

So guess what I've been working on for DAYS. UGH.

They had some sample ones on the RRCA site (our little club's momma club) but of course the way they describe you should do things is totally not how we do. So either I have to change the entire method of operations, or rewrite the bylaws to match how we do it. I figured it's easier to change words than people, so here I am.

This is a lot of pressure. :giggle

run away! run away!

:giggle

I was gonna suggest same... I used to be targeted to lead any kind of group, which I loved when I was young/er....
now?
I literally would run the mile...I just hop it on my crutches!!!!!!!!:backing

I don't envy you the task, Angie. I do know that your taking the time to do it right will only make things go more smoothly for you later.

People just sense that you are a natural born leader Angie. Kinda stinks that you can't just get together and run without all the darn rules though, huh?

i usually play dumb when i get a whiff of someone trying to promote me to those club positions ... i would rather be a busy worker bee, helping where needed than the one in charge for that kind of stuff. i helped manage a soccer team for my daughter one year, signed up to help collect checks, send some emails ... and it warped into mgr! it was messy and unpleasant dealing with crazy parents at times!

I feel your pain! I find myself in the same type of positions and I'm beginning to think that I am just 'enabling' the others to be lazy. I'm practicing my 'NO' as we speak.

I am just like you Jenn!

oh man thats rough .. we had to resign from our swim club entirely after hubby got stuck with a committee position that eat up all his weekends... their attitude towards dumping more and more work on him meant that it was easier to leave the club than resign the position. so Angie .... run far and run fast!

i'm giggling at the run away comments. you are writing the bylaws, so be sure to include a clause as to how long the positions can be held. also, try and plan for succession - so you are president for one year and emeritus the next. :) this way you don't have to do it for very long.

Write whatever you want. No one else wants to do it, so be sure to include a Cleopatra chaise lounge carry clause, a bacon cheeseburger clause, a 'the president is always right' clause, etc. Have everyon sign it/agree to it (of course, no one will read it), and then start enforcing those bylaws, baby! :giggle

run away! run away!
Bwaaa haa haaa I agree with Anne!!! Sounds like to much work. And with all the bylaws & rules.... aren't clubs supposed to be fun?

Anne - you crack me up - LOL... a few years ago I kept getting stuck doing yearbook pages once it was discovered I knew my way around photoshop. And this "friend" usually only was "friendly" to me when she needed something for her son's class as I guess she had volunteered to manage it. After I spent major time doing it for her two years in a row, and not hearing from her at all in between, the third year I finally said, "I'm sorry, I just don't have time and sent her the links to purchase PS elements." Needless to say, I don't really hear from her anymore...but I have to say it felt so good to say no!

So Angie, are you gonna stick with it or try and get out of it? I would think if it's something that really makes you unhappy I wouldn't do it, life's too short to be pressured into something you don't want to do. I'm pretty sure though, you'd be great at it! I would love to have you as my running club president (if I was in one)!
