Definitely needing good thoughts at the moment. Sleep Study and fitting of CPAP is tonight. As much as I’m happy this day has come, my anxiety is through the roof thanks to a stressful and traumatic experience involving a mask while lying down in hospital when I was much younger. I had counselling in the years afterwards which helped for the next hospital experience but this was about 15-20 years ago now so having flashbacks again. May need to arrange for some more support as I’ll have to wear the CPAP every night to feel better. That’s also the annoying thing, I know why I need it, I’m older etc but my mind keeps going to what happened 20 years ago so anxiety and panic set in.
I'm sorry Jennifer! I know it took DH some time to get used to his C-Pap. Now, he can't sleep well without it! I know that in the decade he's had his, the masks have come a long way. Maybe you'll find one that doesn't bring on as much anxiety? I hope so!
Jennifer it will be ok if you are getting great rest with it. Perhaps they can give you a small dose of anti-anxiety meds to take for a few days to calm you until you get used to it.. hang in there Keeping you in my thoughts! Good luck!
So far so good. Been here 2 hours and in that time I’ve had a mask trial and had all the wires attached to me ready for sleep in about 2 hours.
So far the anxiety hasn’t hit - could be because unlike the last “mask anxiety/panic” situation I’m in a lot more control and don’t see the mask coming on to my face and go into fight or flight mode. Still got the actual sleep time to do so we will see in the morning.
do they allow you to listen to calming music/nature sounds/audiobooks while you're there? they might help, although it may be a bit late if you're already set up but i'm thinking good thoughts for you!
I’m set up in terms of all the extra bits and pieces but haven’t started the machine yet - that will be just after 10pm when the overnight team come on. Been listening to music while I’ve been waiting which I think has helped.
Hoping it all goes smoothly and you are able to get a good nights sleep! And hopefully the benefits will far outweigh any anxiety you might have.
Thinking of you Jennifer. My DH (like Courtney's) can't sleep without his now. You'll be better off after you get used to it. Hugs
Well, was a good night all things considering. Have a few teething issues with fit around nose but knew that would likely be an issue as I’ve had so much surgery on my nose over the years.
It's a good thing you were able to be there overnight and have them help you with fit/etc. Here's hoping it's all set and easy, trouble-free for you once you get it all set up at home! My dad absolutely loves his CPAP and I've been bugging my DH to do a sleep study.
I'm so glad everything went okay! I've been offline for a while because we had new flooring put in our den where my computer is . . . and then Facebook went nutso on me and wasn't loading anything on my phone. Anyway, I'm continuing to pray that you get the best fit and you can start getting sleep that restores you!
Fit will be a case of trial and error as well as small adjustments here and there I think. At the moment 95% of the time it’s perfect - I only had to get help with adjusting it twice last night. I have the machine now and go back to the specialist on the 16th and then again on the 9th next month.
@littlekiwi - This is really great Jennifer! I hope your nights continue to go well and that you get the rest you have been missing.
Jennifer, do you need to wear it at least 4 hours a day for insurance to pay? My sister just started using hers and I think the advice that the gal that was helping her was really helpful. She told my sister to wear it when you are watching TV. An hour here and there so you can start accepting it and getting used to it. HUGS!!!!
@Dalis my machine is a loan machine from the public hospital here even though I was referred through to a private specialist so it’s a bit different in the sense that I don’t pay for it at all
