    Journaling Reads:
One of the greatest things about our vacation to the Outer Banks, was the chance we had to explore the historic sites and learn about the history of the area. We visited the Currituck ligthouse, saw a one room school house, and visited the gift shop. The kids got to learn about the brackish water of the Currituck Sound. We learned about the history of the wild horses and why they are on a preserved piece of land away from humans. The kids got to see all kinds of new creatures including ghost crabs and an assortment of shore birds. We walked through a replica of an Algonquin village and the kids could touch deer skins and pheasant feathers among other replicas of things the natives used on a daily basis. The picture above shows the longhouse we got to walk through and explore. We saw how they farmed the land and used nature. Then we got to walk aboard the Elizabeth II; an old sailing vessel and there was even an actor who played the Captain and told us all about his life at sea. We got to explore an old English settlement and learn of the hardships the first settlers endured. We watched a nail being made in the way the blacksmiths used to make to build their homes when they first settled in the Carolinas. It was quite an experience for the kids who were unaware of the history of the first settlers and their relationship with the Natives. They were eager to try on some of the old clothes and armor that was worn then. I was quite surprised how much they enjoyed the reenactors! We also visited the Wrights Brothers Museum and the kids participated in a 'young aviators challenge' where they had to listen to the park rangers and explore the historic site to answer questions and earn a badge. It was a lot of fun! We also went to the aquarium and saw lots of marine life including sharks, jellyfish, otters, alligators, crabs, and sting rays. The kids got to touch some of them, too. It's safe to say, our family loves to explore as much as we can! ~August 2016

Journaling Reads: We spent the day on Roanoke Island and one of the places we visited was the Visitor Center. The kids loved it! It was a nice break from the hot sun, too. They got to see lots of the native animals, plants, and trees up close in the exhibits. They learned about taking care of nature and being responsible with camp fires. They even got to sit inside a replica of a plane the forest rangers use. We picked up lots of brochures and a map or the preserve, too.
