For PSE, instead of adding a shadow, duplicate your layer. fill that layer with the desired color of your shadow. black, dark grays or browns....
the timing of layouts also, usually when I add a page I like to leave comments to those around me...that can be also, sometimes a page just grabs...

A helpful hint. Duplicate your layer with the cut out. place behind and make smaller. Do this again and again. Add deep shadows to your liking....
