Today is Pigs in a Blanket Day! No, not these (even though he is kinda cute) But, these!! Gosh, I haven't had one in a long time, but now I'm really craving some! I never knew until I was reading about them today that there are different versions all over the world. When I make them, I mostly use croissants and either hot dogs or little smokies, with lots of mustard for dipping!! Do you enjoy pigs in a blanket? Have you tried different variations? What's your favorite? Dipping sauces??
We do make the ones with the Lil Smokies that are very good. I like honey mustard for dipping. I make the "big" pigs in a blanket. I start with Oscar Meyer bun length dogs, and make a slit down the middle. I cut up extra sharp cheddar cheese and stuff the dogs. Then I wrap with crescent rolls. They are so good and buttery yumminess!
Yes, they are!! I was going to have hot dogs for dinner one day this week, but now I'm thinking I was pigs in a blanket instead
Oh yum!! Yes!! I love them with cheese and extra sharp cheddar is my fav! Definitely going on the menu this week
I do the same as you Jan @IntenseMagic ... we had not had them for quite a few years, and so since the holidays were not the most exciting as I could not do anything with my arm, my hubby made us the pigs in a blanket.. we used the little smokies and the croissant dough... it was real cheap to make and fun for noshes... I couldn't believe the grocery wanted $12 for Martha Stewart Brand of already made, just heat kind.. LOL if it cost us $4 that was a lot! It made a lot too that we had lots of leftovers to reheat.. I would make them when I worked, for pot lucks... cooking them right before leaving for work in the morning.
In the UK ours are mini sausages wrapped in bacon then roasted. Pretty well the favourite part of Christmas dinner!
I used to eat these all the time, loved them! I used to make these for the kids when they were young, with crescent roll dough and cut up hotdogs.
My husband brought home a breakfast version a few weeks ago: sausage wrapped in pancakes. It was not good because it was frozen. We may need to try them homemade instead.
This is what we called pigs in a blanket. Ingredients: 8 hot dogs Oscar Mayer Bun Length 3 slices American cheese cut into strips 16 slices precooked bacon 8 hot dog buns Instructions: Preheat oven to 450ºF. Slit hot dogs lengthwise down the middle, but not all the way through. Stuff cheese strips into slit. Wrap 2 slices of bacon around each hot dog, securing with toothpicks. Bake hot dogs for 10 minutes. Serve in buns with desired toppings.
I'm just the opposite a lot of times. I'm picky about my hot dogs, so sometimes I just have a bun with chili, mustard, and onion lol Holy cow! $12 for ready made, no thanks!! That sounds so yummy!! I used to make them a lot more when my kids were younger. I don't know why I haven't in so long. Yeah, I'm not so fond of the sausage in pancakes, but it is probably a lot better homemade! Right? I've got to fit them in sometime this week lol Ooooh those look amazing!!! I need to try that! Thanks for sharing!
My mom used to make us these all the time. It's been ages since I made them for my kids. We make these too! Add a little brown sugar on top before roasting! Ummmm....may have to try these! My kids would love them.
I never heard of pigs in a blanket until I moved to the states! I love hotdogs or sausage, so I was in love w/ them.
I don't love them (never crave them), but every once in a while for a change in what we have for dinner I will make it. My son and hubby like them the most. My daughter can't have them at the moment as she messes with changing some things that are in her diet.
Those look so yummy! I think I'm going to have to try those! I think my family would love them... cuz they are wrapped in bacon!
I make them the way my mom did: regular hot dogs cut in half, wrapped in one-half of a Pillsbury biscuit and baked. My granddaughter LOVES pigs-in-the-blanket.
I want some now. Haven’t had them in years. When we do make them, it’s with the pillsbury croissants and eat them with ketchup and mustard….
This was a favorite dish when my kids were young. I'd purchase little smokies and canned buttermilk biscuits and let the kids make them. We've also in the past made them when camping by wrapping pizza dough around a hot dog and roasting over the fire. My husband always seemed to catch his on fire, though, and he's a Scoutmaster!
