Happy July and welcome to the inspiration challenge!

I recently came across a blogpost highlighting contemporary female artists and decided to choose one of them to be our inspiration this month. Jesse Mockrin is an American painter. She is known for lifting scenes from the old masters (such as Vermeer) but cropping them to focus on specific body parts or movement in the original scene. Her color choices are often deep and moody and she uses negative space to great effect. I am particularly drawn to the diptychs that appear to either compare women from different works, or illustrate a continuous scene that doesn't quite sync up.

Looking at her work, I felt like so much of it could easily translate to our medium.
    Here are a few examples:

I also created a Pinterest board with more examples should you need further inspiration. https://www.pinterest.com/bu_ashley/jesse-mockrin-works/

Here is my page by Jesse Mockrin's works. I went with a black background and diptych that draws on her cropped scenes.

I hope you enjoy getting to know this contemporary artist and can't wait to see your pages!

Gentle Reminder: Your page must contain at least 75% Lilypad product. Your page should be posted to the Lilypad Gallery and then linked to the July Challenge Layouts thread so it can be tracked, and to this thread.

The Lilypad uses a percent system for our challenges; the number of challenges you participate in determines the store discount you will receive at the end of the month:

    2 challenges = 10% off
    4 challenges = 20% off
    6 challenges = 30% off

If you complete 7 challenges, you will receive a coupon for 30% off, plus you will be entered to win a $50 gift certificate from the Lilypad! The first seven challenges will be posted on the first of the month; the eighth challenge is the BYOC challenge, which is posted on BYOC release day. Each page counts for one challenge (you cannot use one layout for multiple challenges).

I looked at her entire body of work. The thing I enjoyed the most and think I could be inspired from are her 2017 pieces that are faces mostly in blue circles (XOXO exhibit). If I do something inspired by those, would that count as "inspired by" or does it need to be a diptych?

I'm not familiar with this artist, but I really like her use of negative space. I used her use of falling flowers and black background as my inspiration.

Absolutely! A diptych is not required, that was just something that I enjoyed in her work.

Not a fan of her work? It can be something as simple as a color scheme that inspires you. Thanks for giving it a go.

I think that the issue is that I sometimes take the challenge too literally! :D

This was interesting - definitely the most minimalist layout I've ever done but adding anything else just seemed wrong.

I had not heard of this artist, not my personal taste but I did enjoy the use of negative space and dark colors along with the comparisons

thank you for the inspiration. I was reminded of those times when the little ones got hold of my camera and searched these photos out. I didn't crop these - they are as they were taken.
