My grandmother passed away in May and I'm putting together a book with her recipes, stories, photos, etc... for Christmas gifts. It got me thinking of my favorite things she cooked when I was child. What is your favorite home-cooked meal from when you were a child?
Ok - this is So sad, but my mother didn’t cook - so Hamburger Helper’s Potato Stroganoff was the best thing she did. We still eat that at my house today. Now my grandmother’s could cook - yum! We still have my grandmother’s chocolate pie at every family gathering.
bubble & squeak It's a mixture of mashed potato and boiled cabbage cooked in a frying pan. It's named after the noise it makes in the pan. I craved it during one of my pregnancies, but couldn't get it right. My mum laughed when I phoned her for help. It doesn't work with freshly cooked potatoes and cabbage - has to be cold first. Mum always made it from leftovers.
I'm sorry to hear that you just lost your grandmother, Farrah. My grandmother (and my mother) were THE best cooks! We always had "Sunday dinner" usually at Grandma's house. She'd get out her good china every Sunday. I have her china now. We always wanted Grandma to make chicken and dumplings. Of course, she didn't make them EVERY Sunday, but we could usually con her into, at least, making us some dumplings. She made her famous Orange Cake for special occasions - it took her all day to make that. My paternal grandmother (Granny) made the best Bread Pudding I've ever eaten and we always wanted her to make Rice Pudding, too. She used to make us Salmon Patties that were very yummy. Both my grandmas made different things.
aw Farrah! hugs to you! what a great honor to get others happy about their homes posted! I love love love my mom's pies, and what a joy to see her as a grandma, sharing them with my boys!(and husband lol) She uses lard and ice cold vodka in her crust!
So sorry about your grandmother, Farrah Anything with my mom's mashed potatoes and green beans. I don't know what she did to them, but they were always soooo good!
We always have Bubble and Squeak following Thanksgiving...I always thought it was called that because of the sounds after you eat it HAHAHAHAHAHA
Mikes mom still does Sunday Dinner (well, before covid)...and I'd really love to do that too, but I'm too lazy
My mother's mashed potatoes. Which we had almost every night, because potatoes were a major food group for my family. We also always had a nice Sunday dinner. Nothing fancy, strictly meat and potatoes (did I mention the potatoes?). Also: my mother's Christmas baking. Again: nothing fancy, but just so, so good. Shortbread; mincemeat pie; sugar cookies.
I have many! Meatballs, mashed potatoes, scalloped corn and lefsa! mmmm with loads of gravy Homemade potato pancakes topped with cheese My grandmothers knifflies (german dumplings) with soup or gravy My dads Mc Jerold's (he made his own breakfest sandwhich.. *L*).. with egg, ham and cheese
I don't think I've ever had an apple salad. It sounds delicious! What goes into it (other than apples, I mean)?
From my grandmother I remember her homemade cinnamon rolls & homemade apple sauce! Mmmmmm! My mom - I don't really have a favorite meal but my favorite memory surrounding meals was that whenever we had friends over she would always let us make our own pizza. She'd buy pre-made crust and let us make them with whatever toppings. It wasn't really that the pizza was delish but my friends all thought it was super cool that my mom let us do that.
My Grandmother's Lamb Shanks.. She made them in the pressure cooker.. I have a similar recipe that gets it as close to Grandma's as my memory can remember LOL.. I have others but as far as Grandma that was it!
