Our brand new city Library opened yesterday after a 2 year renovation. I thought I might walk over there last night to return books rather than drive the 5 miles to the other closer library but it was too hot. Glad I didn't go...

Sadly, at 7pm-ish, our friend's 14 yr old son was one of the victims in an armed robbery. His house is about 2 houses away from the library. Neither boy was hurt but it's a sign of the times. My dh used to ask me why I didn't walk at 6am-ish (alone) and this is the kind of reason why.

Armed robbery for a cell phone and ear bud. :(

Maureen, I'm so sorry for your friends son! While I'm very grateful that they're okay physically, I do hope they are able to process their mental and emotional trauma.

So gross! Why would someone try to rob a 14 year old (and with a gun)?!? That's crazy. Were the boys walking on the street or did the perpetrators break into their house?

I'm SO sorry to hear this, Maureen. Over a cell phone and ear bud. :( Thankfully, he wasn't hurt, but still - I can't even imagine the trauma that he (and the rest of you) have been through. Sending lots of healing hugs.

That's so sad and so scary. I get it, I try not to go by myself if it's dark.

This is awful, Maureen! I'm sure it must have been traumatic even though the boys didn't get hurt. Glad you didn't go and sad for your friend's son.

@SeattleSheri The boys were walking home...from the library? I don't know for sure. I am one house in from the main street which is the east-west street in and out of our town. What might have been referred to as 'the main drag' in the past.

How traumatic for those 14-year old boys. Over a cell phone and an ear bud!?!

So the only thing left for kids to do is go outside, and now they can't even do that? This sickens me! So sorry he had to go through that. I'm sending bad vibes to that robber.

That's terrible, and so traumatic for them. So hard when you can't feel safe in your own neighbourhood. :-(

So sorry that this happened to your friend and their son. It could have been so much worse. Glad that you decided to stay at home and so very glad that he is alright and that the only damage was the loss of a cell phone and ear buds.

That's terrible, I'm so sorry it happened to him and that this is unfortunately not uncommon here too - your title is so true, very sad.
