Hello and welcome to the Christmas in July slow scrap =)

Many of the elements that come in Christmas kits are 3D and need more realistic shadows to really make them POP. Today, we are going to add realistic shadows to 3D elements. (you do NOT need to use Christmas elements for the challenge)

    1. Drop Shadow & Outer Glow - 3D items need not only a drop shadow, but and outer glow to help make them stand out from the page more than a flat element I use the shadow styles called "Shadow like me" by One Little Bird, but all of the shadow styles from any designer include a 3D style.

    2. Create layers - we want to be able to adjust each of the styles separately. To do this, right click on the layer and click "create layer"

    3. Warp shadow - I like to use the warp tool to slightly pull the shadow away from the element and skew it a little. Edit -> transform -> warp. The smudge tool works also. =)

    4. Dodge and Burn - I like to use the dodge (highlights) and burn (shadows) to add a bit more depth.

    5. Curves layer for a color pop - I also added a curves layer to help pop the color, or you can use the levels layer style. The goal is to add just bit more contrast.

Here is another example using a ribbon as well, using the same steps as above

    Here are today's instructions:

Please post your completed layout in The Lilypad gallery. GALLERY RULES: Layouts must contain at least 50% TLP products. (Templates count as 15%.) Uploads must be less than 250k. List all credits; no off-site linking allowed.

Create a layout that you LOVE that shows at least 1 ELEMENT that you have used 3D shadowing to add dimension. (it does NOT need to be Christmas themed)

    I can't wait to see everyone's take.

You have 24 hours to finish your pages. Layouts are due Friday, July 24, 2020 at 2pm Eastern time. Please load you pages to THIS gallery and post them below. Have fun!!!

Sorry I missed the chat. I just sat down to my laptop and it was 11:05 a.m. central time, so I missed it by an hour. I'll be back with a page though.

I've had a go at translating this into Affinity. I used the technique on the items in the top left cluster.

Fun, fun, I love playing with shadows. I used the technique on the cluster elements at the top. I also used it on the two snowflakes in the middle and the photo and the snowflake scatter.

Thanks for the chat & challenge! I've used the technique on the beads, bells, & foliage along the bottom. I adjusted other shadows too.
