THE MINIMUM FILTER - Sketch Effect - and more!

Hi everyone! Anne here, delighted to be hosting this month's advanced challenge featuring the use of the minimum filter, which produces a lovely sketch effect. My thanks goes to the wonderful @wombat146 Ona who created the original tutorial.

So your task this month is to
Use the Minimum Filter/Sketch Effect tutorial on your photo and then use that photo in a layout.
Please show a copy of the photo before the effect was applied.
The effect must be clearly visible on the photo in your layout - ie don't cover it up with a million bits and pieces :)
Only NBK Design products to be used in your layout please.

    TUTORIAL

    1. Duplicate the photo background layer
    2. Remove the color from the duplicate layer Ctrl+Shift+U and name it B&W
    3. Open Levels Ctrl+L . Adjust the outer end sliders in towards the middle to give your photo some contrast. You don't want it too contrasted though, so it can be a matter of trial and error
    [IMG]

    4. Duplicate this layer so your layer panel looks like this
    [IMG]

    5. Working on the top layer (B&W Copy), Invert your image Ctrl+I. This has a really weird effect, but don't worry.
    6. Change the blend mode for this layer to color dodge, and don't worry if your image has now disappeared altogether.
    7. Go to Filter>Other>Minimum.
    8. Move the slider either left or right and watch your sketch appear. I left my slider at just 1. You may need to adjust this number for your photo.

    9. Click OK to return to your photo.
    10. Highlight this layer and the b&w layer below it. Press Ctrl+E to merge the 2 layers.
    11. You can stop here if you just want a greyscale effect. If you want to add some color back in, carry on reading.
    12. Move down to the bottom color background layer. Pointing on the actual photo in the layer panel, double click and then click OK when the next box comes up.

    13. Your background layer should now read Layer 0
    14. Move this color layer up to the top so it is above the b&w layer.
    15. There are two ways in which you can add the color back:-

    a) Simply change this layer to color blend mode and tweak the opacity to suit
    OR
    b) Add a mask to this layer. Fill it with black. Then use a soft white brush to gradually paint some color back in, starting with an opacity of about 20 and working up from there in areas where you want more color. You could also use one of Nicole's blender brushes for a more interesting effect, but make sure the blend mode of the brush is set to normal and the flow is at 100%.

    END TUTORIAL

Here are some additional things I applied to take my image to the next level.
    1. Duplicate the top layer, color burn blend mode, 100%
    2. Love & Light Mixed Media pp, color burn blend mode, 100% to add some subtle grunge
    3. Brave New World pp, color burn blend mode, 58% - to add a bit more depth
    4. Love & Light Mixed Media pp 13, Multiply blend mode, 100% - to add texture and some painterly clouds. Masked out the area I didn't want.
    5. Love & Light Mixed Media pp, Divide blend mode, 35% - to add in a bit more light.
    6. Finished off with a word art from Sandy Beaches.

    And here's the end result

What a cool challenge, Anne! Thank you so much for the tutorial and the inspiration!
The photo I used is a house I saw during a lockdown walk last month. I could so much picture me living there! (#not_happening)

This was fun challenge and my first challenge. Thank you so much for the Tutorial. I'm fairly new at this digital scrapbooking but I am working so hard to build and increase my skill.

Awwww. Thankyou. I've always loved technology, scrapbooking and crafting....But always held back from Digital because I like depth and texture, so I've really been working hard between designs and skill to get there....

Great technique and it worked in PSE quite well. I included the original photo because it worked in the layout.

Can you just put the original version in your member gallery? Or maybe you could use Imgur?

Yes....I think I was using PSE when Ona introduced me to this technique. It's definitely one of my all-time favourites, and it's not too difficult either.
