Quick very basic instructions for cutting shapes out of a paper and getting them on their own layer:

You have your patterned paper on one layer.
You have your shape/element on another layer.
Select the shape/element layer. Select> Load Selection to get marching ants around the shape. (on a Mac - I do CMD click on the layer thumbnail as an alternate method to get the marching ants around my shape. I think it's CTRL click on the layer thumbnail on a PC?)
Select your patterned paper layer. Layer> New > Layer Via Cut (shift, CMD + J on a Mac, so .... shift, CTRL +J on a PC ????)
*CMD J/ CTRL J just copies the shape to a new layer - it will not cut the shape out of the paper.

Cntrl shift j will make a copy on a new layer AND cut the paper from the layer below. (maybe cntrl alt j? I feel like my alt and shifts sometimes get confused)

You mentioned a bold pattern in your explanation, and all the examples are bold, high contrast patterns. Is a more subtle pattern acceptable? For example, can we use a tone on tone pattern with small dots in a slightly darker color than the rest of the background? I'm another solid backgrounds person, and even a pattern like that will be a challenge for me, LOL!

It doesn't have to be as bold as the inspiration piece. But it does have to be a pattern. It can be bold or subtle. (feel free to PM an image if you are still unsure).

As the shape? Sure. The shape you are using to make your cuts is totally up to you.

PSE users (even PS works the same way)

Here is a screen print from PSE to help you...

With the element on the layer:
    • hold down control and click on the element in your layer panel. That will put the selection/marching ants aound the shape of the element.
    • Select layer of your pattern paper and then you just need to go to Layer >New> Via cut... that puts your element shape cut out of the patterned paper on a new layer.
    • Continue doing that for the 95%.. for each of your element shapes just rotate a bit above where you cut them out :)
    Add shadows and decorate :)

Awesome! I got nervous when you said "no templates." I didn't want to use a cut file if that would be considered cheating! :giggle Can't wait to start this challenge!

If you are using the cut file as "a shape" to make your cut outs - you will be fine.

Love the idea but this will tax my brainpower to figure out how to do it in PixelLab app. Might have to do a few trial runs to get it right. If I get it to work it will be another tick on my learning chart!

So, the patterned paper has to be the same for both the foundation paper and cut paper, correct? As in, I can't cut out the shapes and then clip a new paper to the shapes? You can still see that the shapes have been cut out of the foundation paper, but the contrast of the paper clipped to the shapes helps them stand out better.
Just clarifying :) This will be a fun challenge!
