It's time to pick out our next batch of books to read together! Anyone who likes to read is welcome to join in and make a suggestion and I'll keep track of them here. Once we get 10 recommendations, I'll start a new thread to vote on the top four. Let's keep it to one suggestion per person for now because when I do the poll I can only have 10 choices... I will keep this thread open until May 15th or until we get 10 recommendations to vote on. Sound good? So... what should we read together in 2019? 1. Educated by Tara Westover 2. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah 3. You by Caroline Kepnes 4. My (Not So) perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella 5. The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore 6. Wish You Were Here by Renee Carlino 7. Suncatchers by Jamie Langston Turner 8. A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena 9. The Lost Roses by Martha Hall Kelly 10. The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
I am going to start by adding Educated by Tara Westover. I just read it and it's a really good and fascinating read!
I read a lot of books. Many times they are the free Amazon prime or part a part of that $10/month Amazon Book thing... so I don't participate a lot here. One that I read recently was The Nightingale. Omigoodness, one of the best books. The only thing is - you gotta give it like 75-100 pages to really get into it (sorta like the first Girl with a Dragon Tattoo book). https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JO8PEN2/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
I read a lot too . . . and have been having trouble finding books to really sink my teeth in to. Jenn - thank you! Just ordered it off Amazon! This genre is my preferred too! The last GREAT book I read was You by Caroline Kepnes. This book is so different. It's disturbing, but riveting . . . almost feels like a love story, but no. Since I've read it, they made a series out of it on Netflix. Read the book - so much better!
I started this after watching the 1st season of the series and it was even too hard for me to read, cringing & not wanting to turn the pages - I think I got about 50 pages in & donated the book to the 2nd hand shop ( I will say I love /hated/was obsessed with the series though but might not of made it thru if DH wasn't also holding the remote!) I've read so little this year but I'm enjoying The Disasters by MK England (I'm about 75% done & it's technically YA sci_fi I think & has some language so I don't know if I can recommend it) but I'm keen to see what others recommend b/cos it's coming into winter here now & I definitely lie in my toasty bed & read more in winter!
I have her True Colours book on the shelf ATM, I read somewhere (possibly in the GR Alaska thread) a lot of people thought Nightingale was her best book.
I have My (Not So) perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella, it's from 2017 & she's a pretty well known author so should be in libraries everywhere (possibly famous last words but if you need any extra suggestions before this thread needs to close, I'd add that (before I forget! )
Great suggestions already! Thanks! @jk703 I LOVED the Nightingale too! I think I read that last year maybe? I'd probably read it again if it gets picked. @bellbird I love every book by Sophie Kinsella. She writes books that are so easy to read and very entertaining. I really enjoyed the Not So Perfect Life one too!
@bellbird I was the same way with “You”, I tried reading it twice and just couldn’t do it. It was too disturbing for my gentle (old) heart!!
Old or not, I think 'disturbing' is the only word I can think of for 'You' Eta: you, the book, not you, Carol - I am Allison's awkward kit
I have just finished "Why Mummy Drinks" by Gill Sims - so very funny but way too much bad language to recommend for a book club I think...
It's so hard to keep it to just one book rec!! But, I'll go with Wish You Were Here by Renee Carlino, a romance novel from 2017. I recently read two of her books in a row and both of them kept me turning the pages way after my bedtime!
I'm not sure if I recommended this one other time, but I'm going to recommend Suncatchers by Jamie Langston Turner. My husband I both loved this book. It's free on Kindle Unlimited Reading right now.
