Why it Works | Using Halves

Welcome to another edition of Why it Works, where we share and highlight a page from an awesome scrapper in our gallery that utilizes a really cool technique, a design trick, a photography tip, journaling ideas or any number of other things to get you scrapping outside your comfort zone. We hope to share and inspire you to try something new, revisit an old technique you may have forgotten about, or maybe just approach that blank canvas in a new way.

So, here are some of the things you can do to be involved in this thread if you want to be.

1. Ohhh and Ahhh over the awesome layout or project that has been highlighted and head over to the gallery and show the scrapper some love.
2. Learn something new from the tip or tutorial. It's all about becoming better at our craft!
3. Try the technique yourself and post it in this thread for us to see.
4. Show off other pages from the gallery that use the technique as well. Be sure to link them so we can give them the love they deserve!
5. Ask questions about the technique that you may have or tell us how you may do it differently. There are many ways to do these things and this thread is all about the learning!

*note: this is not to be a critique of the page/project in any way, it's all about learning to emulate the awesome technique highlighted. Any negative comments about the highlighted page will be deleted.*

Today’s Why it Works post is all about design and composition. I’m always on the look out for interesting ways to compose my pages and the TLP gallery is chock full of inspiration. For example, how often do you take something and put it on your page … but only use half of the object?

Take a look at what page artist @roxanna has done on two of her recent pages.





She used half circles and the result is such a beautiful composition in both instances. It made me want to grab all the circle brushes and circle elements I could find in my stash and play with them on my pages as half circles.

This idea can also translate to other shapes as well. Half a triangle, star, square, hexagon, heart or diamond …. the possibilities are endless and I think it pushes our creativity in new directions!

So … next time you are sitting and staring at a blank page … consider using “halves” as the basis for your page design. It’s quick, easy and FUN!

I love interesting compositions like the two pages you shared so much! Always inspires me to see page artists use shapes and design in different ways ... and really helps when we sit down to a blank canvas! I had so much fun making my page with your ideas, thank you! :beat
 
@jenn mccabe wow, thank you so much for including my page and a great thread for me to now stalk and pick up on some new ideas. I just wanted to do something different with my journaling other than a 'box' like I usually do but wanted my page to 'spread' so in came the semi circle :)
 
What a fabulous idea for a thread!! I am constantly looking for new ideas to spice up my layouts. Never thought of using a half!!! Now I am so excited about trying this out!!! :happydance2
