So my computer informed me last night when I shut it down that it was going to update. Ok. It does that. Sure go right ahead.

This morning when I went to boot it up it never made it past the spinning wheel stage. I gave tried everything I can think of. Hubby has spent the last 2 hours trying to get it back to pre-update status.

Nothing. It just won't respond. And it is not even that old. I am so frustrated right now. All my work (real work and scrapping) is on the computer and we just moved so it is the only one I have.

That stinks big time!!! My hubby is the techi around here and fixes all of my computer problems. I'm not sure what you can do. Hoping you can get it figured out.

I would look it up for you if you tell me which Windows and kind of computer. Might help.

That is what we are doing but I will take all they help I can get. I have a Sony Vaio and it is Windows 10. Hubby has the same. He said his did an update last week that caused havoc for a while but he was able to work through it. Still working on it.

get new internal drive, clone the current, so you don't lose your saved data

Ugh so far not finding any answers I like. (they mention system restore which loses everything). Might be worth the cost of a technician, or at least getting stuff off the hard drive.

That is what I am afraid of. I really need to get some things finished and it is a long weekend. Thanks @carilyne. We shall see it how it goes.

I know. If hubby is looking I'm just going to repeat what he's found already. All I can think of is check Sony's Vaio website. I find good websites on why it's happening but not how to fix it.

Same here. All the fixes require me to have access to the commands. I can't get that far.

Ok. Got into the troubleshoot/restore area finally.
@carilyne you might appreciate this, I just found an article written today by windows news that says this windows 10 anniversary update is not compatible with all machines and users should make sure of this before agreeing to it. Funny thing is Windows 10 does not give you a choice to not update. They force it on you. Now they are blaming users. Hmph.

That figures. I think I've been through it and survived. There was one that took it seemed like an hour. But maybe I'll backup stuff just in case. Hope you were able to save everything. What a mess.

Ohh I was having this issue! For me, it was the update from Aug 24th....not sure if that was the anniversary update. It was supposed to be a fix for many issues, but it messed up so many things. One of my external drives started failing and I couldn't even get windows explorer to do a thing. It kept telling me it was an invalid class. At one point the task bar stopped working. After a complete re-install of Windows 10, I was able to get it back to working and actually loading Windows and I deleted the update mentioned in this article. It was a real pain. I wish I never installed Windows 10 on this computer. I also disabled the Windows Update Service, so hopefully updates won't just auto install anymore.

If you Google, there's a way to change your internet settings connection to metered within Windows 10. If you have a metered connection, Windows won't automatically download and install updates. I didn't do that since I did not want to deal with it.

Oh goodness Erin. That is not good news ... and during your guest polly spot too! I hope You can figure it out and get back up and running soon! So frustrating! Keeping fingers crossed for you!

This updating business is what fried my Nexus 7 tablet a couple months ago. Googling led to me several threads and forums of other people having the same issue. I never did get it fixed. But the android update was apparently not compatible with my device... and last summer my laptop died because the charging port broke, and the laptop was too old for anyone to fix it. I was super bummed.

I totally feel your pain, Erin!

Thanks guys. My techie friend from college got me back in, he talked me through it over the phone. Iam working on making sure all the important things are backed up, thankfully I had done that just recently as well, so not too much work, then we are going to see if we can repair the problem. I hope we can because we don't have funds right now to get a new one, what with our move and setting up house. And with out a computer we are completely without income until hubby's job starts next month. argh.

Unfortunately, this happened to my son. Do you happen to have a PC with Windows 10? If so... Here's what happened to us, and maybe that will help you if you are still having problems.
(sorry this is long - I don't do well with being concise.)

1. Called Microsoft. Couldn't get through to anyone because there isn't a menu option for what he needed help with. Finally got through after punching random buttons (the # and zero "0" work wonders, but you need to go through a couple of menu options before you can start doing that). Gave the phone to my son to figure it out - good experience for him to deal with this. He hung up the phone (!) without letting me know after they said the only way to fix it was to purchase Windows 10 and reinstall it. Right. (He got it when it was a free download).
2. Called Microsoft again. Did the random button punching thing again using # and 0. Got through to someone who couldn't stop reading from a script, and then I immediately asked for their supervisor. Supervisor kept telling me we needed to purchase Windows 10 to fix the problem, kept on talking over me and wouldn't listen. I said no - it's a bait and switch. It was given free during before the August 25 deadline. He kept on asking WHEN he downloaded it. Told him it didn't matter, that Microsoft had automatically done it without his permission. Made my son very angry. They couldn't make us pay to fix for something that we got free. Told me he couldn't do anything, so I decided to wait until Monday to speak to a person at MS in the USA, so I got a case number for reference.
3. Started fuming about the whole thing. Waited 10 minutes calling back, doing the button punching and getting through to someone. Immediately asked to speak with the supervisor, giving them the case number. Gave the number once again to the supervisor, told him the saga about what had been happening, and he decided to help me. FINALLY. He gave me a copy of Windows 10 so son could fix it. Told us to call back once the download had completed.
4. Called again, doing the button punching (there's no direct way to get customer support). That person stayed with my son for 1/2 hour, and they couldn't get the computer to upload. The problem had locked his computer and he couldn't do anything on it. He ended up having to wipe his hard drive and reinstall everything. Every blessed thing. Thankfully he didn't loose anything, but he had to start from scratch.

So, if you need to call Microsoft, good luck. Don't let them read from a script. Ask to have someone in the United States help you (maybe Monday?). Hold strong and don't let them convince you that you need to purchase Windows 10. Don't get off the phone until you have a satisfactory answer and/or fix. And get that case number for reference! Good luck!

Keeping you in my thoughts as you finish working through this today! ((HUGS)) It's always so disheartening when stuff like this happens, and it never happens at a good time!

Thanks @QuiltyMom . We got a few things fixed so it will load past the spinning wheel, it takes about an hour of spinning, but it will boot. We are trying one more thing then we will most likely reinstall everything. The only thing I will loose is my photoshop and Lightroom because they are from a cs6 that we bought years ago and the disc is no longer good. But hubby said I could go ahead and sign up for cc if that happens. We will see how it goes.
