Hi everyone! How awesome was the first week of Summer School? I loved all that I learned about using brushes and blending modes...and how about those Lightroom Tutorials??? Amazing!

This week, the subject is Journal Cards. There are two great tutorials in the forum about using journal cards this week. You can find them HERE and HERE. Plus, don't forget all journal cards are marked at 25% off this week only!

    The Challenge:
This week's challenge is to use journal cards in unexpected ways. The two tutorials do a great job giving you ideas on how to utilize journal cards beyond the pocket page. I do this A LOT in my own scrapping.

So for your layout you have to use at least 1 journal card in an unexpected way. Maybe it's the main focus instead of a photo, or you extract an element of the card, or you use it in place of papers. You must use at least 1 journal card in an unexpected way. Here is my layout for the challenge:

In my layout, I took one of the journal cards from Jaimee's July Storyteller kit and enlarged it to use it as the background and the title of the page. It's funny how a small 3x4 card can be used to make such a huge impact!

Please remember The Lilypad challenges rules also apply here!:
Your page must contain at least 75% Lilypad product.

Once you finished your page, come back here to this thread to leave us a link to your page: you will find the right link to copy on the right hand side of your page in the gallery, under your avatar, you will see Share this Layout.
The right link is the one that says : Share BB Code:
    the third one down.

You have until Sunday, 17th of July at 11:59 EST to post your page in the gallery and post a link here, from those of you who do so, we will select a winner who will get a wonderful $5 for the store!!!!!

Ok, so let me be honest here. I don't know what are expected vs unexpected ways to use journal cards.
I know that they came into the world to journal on and to use in Project Life. So are that the expected ways and everything else unexpected?
I'm sorry if I'm obsessing about this too much. But I need some help as I've been struggling with this for a few hours now.

Yes, anything you do with a journal card that isn't a pocket style layout or used to journal on. Using it as a frame and/or photo mat, enlarging it for the background, extracting word art from it: those are unexpected uses. Here is another example from my gallery. On this layout, all of the title work was extracted from journal cards. I used them, but not as they were intended to be used.

    I hope that helps!

Thank you! I apparently use jc's in an unexpected way most of my time! :)

Here I used it as a backdrop as I would use papers. Hope that's ok?

Journal cards and what I did to use as unexpected word art:
prd_dreams_05_neverletgoofyourdreams JC (removed green edging and then multiplied to get an overlay feel)
prd_gonetothebeach_03_beachdefinition JC (linear burn and color burn blend modes with adjustment of the blending
prd_gonetothebeach_05_tothebeach JC (blend mode of color burn at 76% fill )

Here is my second one with Jenn's tutorial:

I had a blast. I pulled in 144 journal cards into an 8.5 x 11" contact sheet (12 across, 12 down). Used a paper over it all to blend with a linear burn to give the cards a hint of cohesiveness. Then I added a few elements on top of it all for good measure. Thanks for the challenge, for the freebies, for the tutorials.

Great challenge, thanks! The Sail Away title was originally a journal card, I extracted it and added a shadow to give it a vellum look.

Can I ask, how does it affect the printing quality if you super enlarge a journal card like I have seen on some pages here?
