I did it! And it wasn't as hard as I thought... this may be my favorite page ever made from a template:
Quick question for all your PS experts. I am trying to change the color of the enamel dots from Heather's template to a deep shade of red and every time I change it the color is a lighter version of red almost peach colored??? I desaturated the element first and made sure I didn't change the lightness when desaturating. I am using the color overlay in the layers palette. What am I doing wrong... This probably makes NO SENSE - right??
What blending mode? Or actually... Try using a gradient map adjustment layer instead. You want a gradient that goes from white to the red you want on the darkest, shadowed parts. You can adjust the gradient until it looks right. I find this easier than color overlay for things with texture or dimension.
Thanks Lorry - I will try that! Do you duplicate the layer? or desaturate first? Actually I have noticed that something weird is happening in ps - must be a setting - when I will fill with red(for example filling a paint splatter) the color isn't the color of the swatch instead it is lighter. I have checked the opacity not sure what else to check. I am really noticing this when I try to fill with red and the results are peachy toned...

No, I don't do anything else. Just gradient map adjustment layer clipped to whatever I'm recoloring. As for the color, have you checked blending mode?
Mine started out yellow from incandescent and flourescent bulbs, and had the kitchen trashcan and other yucky stuff in the background. I am so happy that I found this photo for this challenge, because I was so disappointed not to have a usable one. Now I do!
