The Time Capsule MOC Challenge has me thinking about how I was a Latchkey Kid, a Generation-Xer coming home along with my elder brother to a parentless home. But as such developing a strong sense of independence and a "do it yourself" mentality. So, which generation do you belong to? Generation Names The Greatest Generation – born 1901-1924. ... The Silent Generation – born 1925-1945. ... The Baby Boomer Generation – born 1946-1964. ... Generation X – born 1965-1979. ... Millennials – born 1980-1994. ... Generation Z – born 1995-2012. ... Gen Alpha – born 2013 – 2025.
Right at the end of the Boomers, so I somewhat also identify with Gen X. I'm not sure how usual it was for mums to work for Boomers but my mum did so I was a latchkey kid as well.
I find it interesting to think about and appreciate the many women that paved the path making it easier for me to have a successful career.
Like I said, I'm a boomer but my mother (Silent generation) did work as did her mother (Greatest generation). Both were teachers. So I was lucky that I wasn't a latchkey kid because of her being a teacher. For a few years, we were in the same school building so I had a ride to and from every day. Before I was school age though I had to go to a babysitters while she taught. Most of those years were with aunts that were the stay-at-home moms.
Gen X and like you grew up left to my own devices! If I was a teensy bit older then in our house we would have had a boomer, Gen X, millennial AND Gen Z, which would have been quite cool as a concept (but glad I sneak in under the line!)
I’m a Gen X. My mother stayed at home until I began school, but then my father retired (he was 55 years old when I arrived, a Greatest), which meant I was never left alone.
I was born in March 1980, so I am a "Millennial" I guess. However, my brother and I were definitely latchkey kids. My dad worked days and my stepmom worked nights, so when my brother and I came home from school there was almost always a note with a list of chores we had to do as well as get dinner made or started most days. We would get a snack and sit in front of the tv until we had to get our chores done. I was glad when I was old enough to get a job after school and not have to do the chores, LOL.
I was born in 1980- so I'm one of those inbetweeners- a Cusper, which means you can have characteristics of both Millennials and Gen X!
Gen X - I was also baby-sitting by the time I was like 10 or 11. I barely let my kids stay home at that age by themselves!! LOL
