Gosh, I would love to make my own sour dough starter and bake my own breads. For at least 6 years now, I've been trying. Ha! I can start a sourdough starter....but eventually, I forget about it and toss it out. I don't have a knack for baking bread from scratch. So often I make bricks instead of bread. The bread may look good and smell good. But so often it comes out as hard as a rock. I am not giving up...and recently found a Kindle book for rather cheep ($4) - Tartine Bread by Chad Robertson. So, I'll be reading through that in an attempt to figure out where I keep going wrong. Maybe over the next 6 years I'll crack the mystery of baking fresh out of the oven bread. I've already told the hubby I want a Dutch Oven for Christmas How about you? Are you are bread baker? Sourdough or otherwise? Gosh, I love breads and biscuits.
Hubby uses our bread machine and makes our own pizza dough, pitas, buns and breads when we need them for a meal. We are not sandwhich eaters usually.. most days having a lot of salads etc., but his breads and pizza dough & pretzels are delicious!
Mmmmm! It was a pizza making show that got me interested in making my own doughs again! I used to have a bread machine. Wonder if I still do???
Not daily but I have made my own bread. I made a lot of dough for stramboli at least once or twice a month and also make homemade pretzels a lot.. we do a lot of mini loaves of bread too... we try different types.. but always go back to normal sweet white bread it is my fiancees favorite...
Once upon a time I made bread from scratch in the oven. Now we have a bread machine so I can make it in that. i don’t make it very often because it gets devoured so fast. I could make our pizza dough in the bread machine but I usually make it in our stand mixer because it’s faster and I never plan ahead for meals.
Nope. I can go weeks without eating any bread. I only buy half-loaves and sometimes will have to throw out the last couple pieces.
@ArmyGrl I totally get you on bread = bricks, it’s even worse with gluten free. I was forced into making my own bread back in May. It was already hard enough finding gluten free bread that I liked but then the one manufacturer that had bread without psyllium husk (which I get violently ill from having) “improved” their bread and added it in so I was left with no choice but to make my bread. I knew I wouldn’t be interested in making it totally from scratch so I bought some gluten free premixes and got myself a bread maker. At first I got a few different mixes to try them out but in the end I hated the ones that were mostly rice flour as part of their mix and found a multigrain mix (tapioca starch, maize flour, potato starch, sorghum flour, quinoa flour, linseed, kibbled buckwheat & sesame seeds) which I add yeast, water, sugar and eggs to from Australia that I can get at my local bulk food/health food store. It takes about 3 hours to make and I do it overnight. With this mix I’ve only had one failure with gummy textured bread and that’s cause I had used larger eggs and not reduced the water by the same amount, was an easy fix though! To be honest if I didn’t know it was gluten free I would never know which is a good sign. I haven’t ventured into making any other GF yeasted bread products yet though I want to (and kind of have to because of psyllium husk being added to everything commercially). The next challenge with that is to find recipes that don’t contain any psyllium husk….easier said than done.
Mmmmm...that sound lovely!! I am happy you were able to find an alternative to gluten breads, Jennifer. Lol, life without bread is very sad.
@ArmyGrl past me would have agreed about life without bread being sad as I was a carb fiend growing up but I’ve actually adapted pretty well given everything.
I made bread during the pandemic. It was delicious, but even with my Kitchen Aide, I suffered later from making it. I just wanted to know that I could do it if there was indeed no bread available.
I've never made bread. DH bought a bread machine several years ago, and it's been used about half a dozen times. We usually only eat about a third to half the loaf before it goes moldy though, so it doesn't seem worth the effort. I'm not a big bread person. I get sandwiches at work, but rarely have it other than that. (Not that I don't eat way too many other carbs.)
Oh, I love to bake (and it's cheaper when I'm feeding six of us!). I've been making my own bread for years. I also do buns, pizza dough, pretzels, cinnamon buns as well as cookies and other "loaves" like banana bread. Monday is baking day at my house so we have enough for the week. I have a KitchenAid mixer and a Bosch mixer and they both get a work out most weeks! I thought about trying sourdough bread but then looked at a recipe and saw that it took 24 hours to make and raise the loaf and, frankly, I didn't have time for that with 4 teenage/almost teenage boys in the house! Maybe someday.... LOL PS My kids think store bought bread is the greatest thing and such a treat...i guess it's all what you're used to LOL
I used to make bread all the time but haven't for awhile now. Just the other day I was thinking that I need to start making bread again because the prices are through the roof. I love the pantry secrets bread recipe. You can have bread in less than an hour and can make tons of other things with the bread recipe - cinnamon rolls, pizza, braids, breadsticks, rolls, etc.
I make Irish soda bread once in awhile, usually around St. Patrick’s Day. It is always a hit. I make sweet rolls or dinner rolls on the holidays (or at least I used to!) DH has a piece of toast each morning but we don’t eat that much bread otherwise.
I have made bread quite a bit in the past, but I haven't for a long time. I think I need to get back to it. I have a really simple bread recipe that is really good. I do make sweet breads, like Amish Friendship bread, in different flavors and in spurts. Everyone loves it at first, but then just doesn't eat it and I get lazy and forget to feed the starters.
My hubby is a big bread eater...we go through two loaves a week ha! I suppose if I switched over to my "brick" bread, he'd stop eating so much.
